2 surgeries in 10 days

Bryson has had 2 cataract surgeries in 10 days. I am exhausted. He currently has to have 11 eye drops per day applied to his eyes. He totally knows what they are and closes his eyes tight and screams every time I try to use them. He now has to permanently wear contacts for at least 6 years. They are $250ish per eye per year. The insurance will cover 1 set per year which means every time 1 gets rubbed out and lost, or tears it comes out of pocket. His brain is also pretty much ignoring his left eyes existence because the cataract had it completely covered for so long. I also feel so much anger towards the dr who saw him 6 times and didnt see the cataract. The extent of the permanent damage is still unknown, but the surgery should have been completed no fewer than 13 weeks ago to prevent permanent damage.

  • :(

    This sounds awful.

I hope that surgery helps. The brain is an amazing thing, so now that the cataract is gone hopefully LO will learn to use both eyes.

    Have courage.

  • Sending you hugs! I'm sorry you and your LO are dealing with this. It would be tough but I would try to have the one day at a time mindset. It sounds like only time will tell on a number of things so let that time pass and wait for the answers to come when they do. Easier said than done I know. Enjoy all of the other positive things that are happening with your LO and this will seem more bearable. Its how I try to live each day even though its crazy tough not to worry about the future and battle the "what ifs" of the past every day.

Definitely contact the company who makes the contacts. When I did hospital social work I was always surprised at the breaks, coupons, discounts, etc... we could get from the pharmaceutical companies if the patient had insurance issues or constraints. Its worth the call because the worst that can happen is they will say no. I hope this helps!

  • Hugs and prayers for you.
Definitely contact as many people as possible. The reps and companies directly for sure.
I would to the doctor that missed it too :)
  • Thanks ladies. I will be contacting the manufacturer for sure. The insurance company has been less than helpful of course haha. I am definitely trying to take things one day at a time. I contacted the administration of hes pediatrician who missed it and they basically gave me a bunch of "I cant comment, we cant help" so I guess I may need to consult an attorney.
  • Probably a good idea
  • Hugs! It's a lot to deal with, but definitely speak with a lawyer and continue to advocate for your son. We're learning with my son's OA/N diagnosis that there is so much out there to help kids at this age to strengthen and improve their vision. Now that the cataract is removed there should be plenty of eye exercises to do to help him. Good news is that his eyes will continue to strengthen and improve until he's between 7-9 they say :)

I am so so sorry for what you, your family and little Bryson are going through. I hope it doesn't come to a draining malpractice suit, and that you get the assistance need! But I'm going to pray for you that he has no permanent damage because because the situation is so unfair.
  • So sorry you are going through this. I can't even imagine how furious and worried I would be. Thinking of you and hoping everything resolves following the surgeries.
