nwmr: good things to make w/ apples that can be frozen?

i know applesauce- I'm debating making it b/c I don't have a food mill but I think maybe I can use my immersion blender?

MH is off gluten so it rules out doing a lot of baked goods and we're trying to eat healthier so don't want to do a ton of desserts.

My kids really like baked/sauteed apples w/ a little butter/brown sugar/cinnamon- do you think I could freeze this?

What else am I missing that I can do w/ all these apples?

Re: nwmr: good things to make w/ apples that can be frozen?

  • apple's life is pretty long so I think your good with just storing them as is and doing whatever with them later on. I dont think they would taste good after baking them with all of those toppings although they are DELISH

you can do apple slices with peanut butter+ peanuts for snacks

you can do lots of salads that include apples

    apple jam/ sauce

and the baking with ice cream on top

you can also try baking apple deserts with gluten free dough and crumbles, my sister does that all the time and she is allergic

  • I make a chunky apple sause on the stovetop by chopping the apples, boiling, and mashing with a potato masher. I'm sure an immersion blender would work well too. It might not be smooth, but chunks of soft apples are yummy. I also use apples to sweeten cranberry sause (for Thanksgiving or anytime) or squash soup. Those things would freeze well.

  • I have made applesauce with my immersion blender. It works, it just comes out super smooth.

I don't have freezer ideas but keeping the apples in fridge will dramatically increase their shelf life.

Maybe gluten free carrot apple muffins? I don't do gluten free so I have no idea if this is feasible.
  • as PPs said, i just mash apples up with a potato masher to make applesauce. lately i've actually been microwaving them with a little cinnamon and a dash of sugar, then mashing- super-convenient.

they do keep forever in the fridge.

i generally make a big batch of steel-cut oats each week. i dice up 2 or 3 apples and just add them in while the oats cook.

i'm sure you could freeze the baked apples with the crumble topping.
  • Apple crisp, apple pies, apple muffins, apple pancakes, baked apples.

I am sure that if you googled gluten free apple recipes, you could find a ton of stuff that could be prepared gluten free.

  • I use applesauce in place of oil when baking.

Applesauce takes an insane amount of apples to make. It was the one baby food that wasn't economical to make.  You will use up a ton just making a batch of applesauce.

  • Thanks all! great ideas.

On the immersion blender or mashed applesauce do you peel them first? I'd really like to avoid that step if possible ;)
  • Yes, I always peel before making apple sauce.
  • What about a pork apple dish and freezing it? You can make a big batch, freeze some and have some for dinner. I think I did a dish I found from pioneer woman..,
