Housekeeper/Maid ?

I have lurked here for a while, but this is my first time posting.  I am a teacher, and when I get home from work I just want to play with my DS and take care of him.  I hate cleaning and find that I put it off until I HAVE to do it.

DH knows how I feel and has been wonderful to step up and help out.  Now, he is offering to hire someone to come in and do these things for us.

My question is how do I go about finding a housekeeper/maid/whatever you want to call them.  I know maids usually only do the deep cleaning...vacuuming, dusting, scrubbing.  Is there a service that will come in and do dishes and laundry as well?

TIA for any help!

  • I recommend that you ask around to your friends for referrrals. Then, I would interview about 3 of them. I would have them come to the house and walk through the house and tell them what you want done. It can include anything from deep cleaning to laundry to dishes. Then ask for a quote from each one based on what you listed as what you want done.

    Totally worth it!

  • Based on what you've wrote it does sound like a cleaning service wouldn't fit the bill since you want more than a house clean (this is usually a flat rate service, where a crew comes in either weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or just a single deep clean). It sounds like hiring an individual at an hourly rate to come weekly or twice a week is more what you need. This would allow you flexibility in having the laundry, dishes, or any other tasks you need done.

If you can't find referrals I would check out Care.com.

  • We have a lady come in, she is from a local service and we found her through some friends of ours.

She charges $50 an hour and will pretty much do anything we ask while she is there. She's even folded and put away DD's laundry for me a couple times. Embarrassed

She mainly does the floors and bathrooms, H and I can manage everything else.

  • Like PP said, word of mouth. I asked a neighbor. Like with child care, there is nothing like a personal recommendation. Ours is a life (and marriage!) saver!

  • I'd agree that an individual would be more likely to do the laundry and dishes than a service.  We've also always hired by word of mouth or personal recs, in fact our current person is someone who started out as a morning sitter for DS and then started her own cleaning business. GL!

  • I would ask around for a 'mother's helper' to do light cleaning?  When I think of a cleaning person I think of a couple of people coming to power through the house with lemon-scented cleaners, but the term mother's helper sort of makes me think of the day to day sorts of chores you are describing.

My 2nd delivery was followed by some complications and I was strictly advised by the doctors to take rest. In such a situation maintaining a house having a 5 year old son was not an easy job. I desperately needed a (edited by MOD to remove spam link). I got hold of one.I  hired them on regular cleaning basis for about a month. Cleaning included bedroom, hallway, bathroom and kitchen. Laundry was not in their package but I had asked for it as a special cleaning need and I had got them done. It was a great relief for me and my house looked perfectly clean as never before.
  • I found the help I get by posting on a local classifieds board for my country. A waitress who wanted to pick up more work contacted me and she comes over to clean my apartment now.

She comes in once in the weekend for 4 hours and cleans the entire 2 bedroom 1.5 flat, and she comes in twice a week for two hours each time after I get home from work at about 6pm and helps me with laundry folding, making the dishes or loading the dishwasher, hanging laundry, prep work for lunch and dinner for the coming day, etc...and my life has tremendesouly changed ever since!

my husband and I both work full time and we wanted time to ourselves with our baby once we are home and time to rest once she is down for the night. I used to hire a company every weekend before I went back to work and they would come for 4 hours once in the weekend to clean but they are expensive. I think agreeing a fee with an independant cleaner is much better plus this way you keep getting the same person over and over which is better to me as I dont have to repeat how I like things to be done.

  • Pps have a lot of great suggestions. You might also want to check if there are any local community Facebook groups where you can ask for recommendations or find someone who needs extra work.
  • I ditto what others have said. The lady that use to clean my house would do dishes and laundry but I preferred she did not and concentrate on other tasks such as dusting. She owned her own business and worked alone.
