High-Risk Pregnancy

Help

Had a check up with a high risk dr friday bc we are having twins. Baby A is developing great, baby B they are concerned about. They said baby B may have extra fluid behind the neck. I am 10 weeks and was told it may be too early for the to be accurate or it may be Down syndrome or a heart defect and have to go through further testing. Has anyone else gone through this? What was your outcome?

Re: Help

  • I'm sorry you are going through this.  With DS2 he also had the same thing - he was born with no chromosomal or heart issues. We did further testing including ultrasounds, blood work, and maternit-21.  There was a variety of soft markers in the ultrasounds - his heart was fine in the fetal echo cardiogram.  Materniti-21 came back negative.  I would assume they will offer you the extra ultrasounds, blood work, fetal echo cardiogram, an amino or cvs, and maybe the mataenti-21 or similar blood test (mine wasn't covered by insurance because it was new at the time).

I decided against the amino because risk of a miscarriage (though it is very low) - I also had a history of PPROM and PTL. I ask my mfm what the difference would be in my prenatal if the found my baby had downs syndrome with the amino or if I didn't do the test.  She said the care and extra monitoring would be the same.  I was already delivering at the hospital with a level 4 NICU so that wouldn't change either.  So for me it wasn't worth the risk .  I wasn't a big fan of the results ultrasounds - because they just look for markers and then they give you a percentage but no actual answer - but ultrasounds are no risk. The fetal heart echo seemed like the most valuable in actually seeing if there are heart problems. In talking with my mfm I also determined because of my total risk factors and that I was further in to my pg that the martiniti-21 test would give me extremely accurate results and the likelyhood of a false negative really low.

I talked to a bunch of nurses, and specialist before I made decisions.  Don't be afraid to ask all your questions and call back if/when you have more. I would make list of all my questions then take them with me or have them with me when I spoke to a person on the phone.

Good luck - Talk to friends and family who will support you.  Thoughts and prayers through this difficult time.
