Has anyone dealt with allergies?

Looks like M might have a peanut allergy. :( He got a tiny bit of peanut butter on a slice of banana and his face got all rashy. A mentioned it at his 15 month check up and the pedi was pretty concerned. We are now the proud owners of an epi pen (that is technically not even dosed for his weight because he is so tiny). We have a follow up with the allergist in December, but I was wondering if you have any advice or words of wisdom in the meantime.

Have you visited an allergist for your LO? What was the experience like? We know that adults tend to go through crazy skin scrapings, are they going to do that to my mini-human?

Have you dealt with peanut allergies yourself or with you kids? Any major watch-out-fors?

You guys are always so awesome, thanks in advance for your help!

Re: Has anyone dealt with allergies?

  • I thought you were talking about pet/dust/seasonal allergies and was going to be like, "omg, yes!"

    But unfortunately (considering no
Babies yet) I'm not familiar with food allergies! I have pet allergies and one med allergy but I don't remember what the testing was like for the pet allergy.... I was too little lol (and the med allergy was discovered when I was prescribed it when I was five)

Good luck with everything through! Hope they can get it figured out and it's not too serious.

  • My wife is allergic to onions, her throat swells shut if she eats raw onions. She developed it as an adult so she didn't have to be tested for it.
I hope you get an answer soon.

  • Thanks everyone! A and I both have seasonal allergies, but have never been tested...we just otc it up. :)

We have been doing tons of research and are on a waiting list for an earlier appointment. It is crazy to be afraid of food. M has had almond milk with no issues, but we are thinking about going totally nut free at home until the appointment.

Thanks for the support as always!

  • I won't go through our giant allergy saga, but I will tell you that our visit to the allergist with G was easy and painless.  Our Pedi had done blood testing, but the findings from the skin testing at the allergist contradicted some of the results.  Both tests have high false positive (and negative) rates, and any allergist worth their salt will tell you that.

Are peanuts your only concern?  Not minimizing, a peanut allergy is a scary thing, just wondering if there's anything else?

  • @JGY Peanuts are the only thing we know of. Because the appointment with the allergist is so far away (December) we are going to try to avoid new foods for fear of accidentally finding new allergies. M has had almond milk with out issue, and seems okay with dairy & wheat. He hates eggs, which the pedi says might be a sign of allergy and I am not sure if he has ever had soy.

He seems generally uncomfortable now- stuffy nose, watery eyes, cough, etc. but A and I have similar symptoms which we are chalking up to fall environmental allergies. We are not super concerned because we don't have any mutli-system symptoms.

We are seriously hoping that is only peanuts! It is serious but not as logistically challenging as some of the more prevelant foods.

Good luck at the allergist (sooo frustrating that it takes so long to get in, I know).

You know, G eats just about anything, but has always turned his nose up to eggs.  As it turns out, that's what he's allergic to.  There definitely might be something to that.

Anyway, you're right that peanuts are a well-known allergen and labeling is really good.  So hopefully it won't be too big of a life stressor.  And seriously, don't worry about the Allergist visit.  It was super easy for us.
