Holy cheese balls I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. This is the closest I've ever been to a middle of he night er trip and I'm not ruling it out yet.

No fever and the cough part isn't that bad but when it started I seriously thought he was choking on something. We did the hot shower thing and that helped a lot. The nurse line told us to go to the er but for now we're holding off.

Wet stuff. He's sleeping (quietly) now, though. She wanted us to take him in because from what I was saying she thought he was doing the high pitched inhalation thing I can't remember what it's called. But when I talked to my husband we agreed we didn't think he had been doing that. So we're not just ignoring her advice honest.

Croup is awful. The steamy shower trick never helped my DS but taking him outside at night in the cool air did. I hope your LO is better soon.

Poor kid! I'm sorry your little one is feeling so bad, what a stressful thing it is to wonder if you need to take your baby to the er or not. Sending you all the feel better and good rest vibes!

Oh man, I remember when DS1 had croup and I was up all night making sure he was ok. That barky cough sounds aweful especially on a little baby. I hope your LO feels better soon.

That's what I thought at first is he was choking on something. It's definitely croup. He doesn't really even have a cold, even though croup starts with one. He has been a little fractious the last couple days. It came on very suddenly! The shower helped a lot and then sitting in front if the freezer. I knew to look for retractions in his rib cage but he's too fat!

Scariest hour of my life and then I didn't know how I was ever going to go back to sleep. My husband held him for most of the night. The sun is up now though and that makes everything better. I'm supposed to run a 5k this morning :S

@Rrrrrachel‌, I laugh at all those times kids get sick right when you have other plans - my DH and I are really bad about going on dates, and one time we had the sitter over, we were all dressed up, DS1 had been happy all day and I was putting him in his crib when he vomited all over me and my dry-clean-only dress. So my DH drove the sitter home and picked up take-out for us, I changed into sweats and started cleaning up vomit and comforting the barfy baby.

Hope he feels better soon and you can get some sleep.

I remember being hospitalized for croup when I was about 3. Couldn't stop coughing for more than a minute or two. I can only imagine how scared my parents were.

Hope he feels better soon! The only reason I remember how much croup sucks and what it sounds like is my younger sister used to get it until she was about 10. It had gotten to be so routine at that time she'd wake up with it and just do the bathroom steam thing herself!

Hope he's doing ok this morning- croup always strikes in the middle of the night!
We took dd to the ER twice in a week for croup when she was around 8 months old. She was wheezing and had retractions, plus the barky cough. I'd never heard croup before but I knew what it was as soon as I heard it. DH didn't want to take her to the ER but I told him, "she's a baby who cant breathe! That's the reason there are ERs!" Albuterol knocked her wheezing out fast.

Eta: once we learned how to treat it at home, we didn't bother with the ER again. She occasionally got croupy coughs with a cold, but Advil was great at keeping the airway swelling down and the steam/cold air alternating helps too.

He's been better today. Still gurgley but just like normal congested baby gurgley, vs are you sure he can breath. I hear the second night is the worst so that should be fun. He has a little spot I suspect might be ring worm, too (no idea how he got it, no one else has it) so I may take him into the regular doctor tomorrow.

I got a warm mist humidifier, too. So I have the cool mist going by his bed and can shut us in the bathroom with warm mist as necessary. Last night out water heater ran out after about ten minutes.

Ugh this freaks me out. Ds had croup a few nights ago and now dd got his cold. Fingers crossed it doesn't turn into this too. I hope your lo is doing better!

You know it's serious when you're doing the deep google.

Last night was better maybe just because I was less freaked. He had a couple periods where he had to be held upright for an hour or so but never sounded like he couldn't breathe.
