I need your opinion on TWO VERY IMPORTANT THINGS.

1) What is the best hot chocolate recipe and/or instant hot chocolate?

2) Who makes the very, very best and warmest house slippers?

Readdddyyyyyyyyyyyyyy...GO.

Edit: If you can't tell, it got cold outside and I'm freezing.  Not ready for this.  Nope. No.  BEAT IT.

Re: If you live where it gets brutally cold...(Canadians, I'm looking at YOU).

  • Oddly enough I don't know the answer to either of these questions. I get my hot chocolate at Tim Horton's....

  • @mishka29 - I am a big fan of the Ghiradelli hot cocoa mixes, but I didn't see any at my grocery store so I may have to expand my horizons.
  • I can't help you with the hot chocolate since I don't like it! But uggs have super warm slippers and Deerfoam does too. I know you can get the deerfoam at Target!
  • I second the nestle carnation or Tim's hot chocolate. Definitely use milk not water.

Slippers- see if you can find someone who makes moccasins. Warmest things ever! I got mine from a local lady and my feet are always warm! I bring them with me wherever I go in winter.

  • I get my inatant cocoa mixes at Bulk Barn. They have regular, white hot chocolate, salted caramel hot chocolate and a spicy one (can't recall the name). All mixed with 2% milk with a touch of cream.

As for slippers, I'm more of a socks girl.

  • Target's cocoa aint bad. In a pinch I'd use Hershey Special Dark syrup and milk.

  • Easiest, and best hot coco recipe is on the side of Hershey ' s cocoa powder. Anyone should have these ingredients, and you can easily adjust the taste to your liking and add flavors (if desired) by using extracts!
  • Swiss Miss with Marshmallows is my favorite hot cocoa mix, and it tastes good with either water or milk for added calcium.

As for slippers, Deerfoam are great, I know you can get them at Target and Costco. Uggs are good ones too, especially if you get some that have the memory foam soles! Keeps my feet toasty! Or you could always buy an electric foot warmer! I know Wal-Mart and Bed Bath and Beyond carry them around the holidays. Good luck!

So cold here too! Supposed to warm up this weekend but I'm skeptical.

Carnation make a delicious pack of hot chocolate mixes that are based on chocolate bars (Coffee Crisp, Aero, After Eight etc). I have only seen it at Costco but maybe it's sold elsewhere also.

As for slippers, I can't help there as I'm not a huge fan. I wear bare feet in the house until I can't stand it anymore. Or until my hubby can't stand me putting my ice cold feet on him... Then I put on socks. But I'm not happy about it :)

    Stay warm!

    Edit: late night typo
  • I love the Starbucks hot chocolate. It's very rich. I got a huge tin of it from costco.
  • Okay I can't be much help with cocoa or slippers. I will literally drink any cocoa around, I love it all! And my slippers are from Target, nothing special. But.....

Do you have an electric blanket?! I discovered my love for them last winter. I would use it while snuggling on the couch but the best thing to do with it is warm up your bed. About 15 minutes before bed, you lay it under your blanket and turn it on. When you get into bed it will be so toasty and cozy. Best $40 I've ever spent!

  • I don't live in a cold climate, but I do have the best hot chocolate recipe - heat up some milk on the stove (stirring constantly) and whisk/stir in NUTELLA to taste. It's SO good! Definitely worth the calories ;)

  • I live in northern Michigan by the lake and it gets cold here!

    My go-to's are

    1) wool socks because I hate wearing shoes and slippers are too close. However my sister did crochet me a pair that I like, but they have a soft bottom.

    2) electric blanket! Love love love mine. I turn mine on to warm up the bed before I get in and it's perfect. Also, mine is king sized and each side is individually controlled.

    1) hot cocoa- I apologize because I measure nothing when cooking. But I use milk, sugar, a little cocoa, and some cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice to taste. Really good!

  • I like the swiss miss w/ mini marshmallows but you have to make it with milk. And I'm not a slipper fan so I just wear those really soft, fluffy socks you can find anywhere.

  • At shoppers you can buy polar fleece slippers with a removable bottom that goes in the microwave... they are heaven! If you live anywhere near Toronto, the Soma chocolate factory at the distillery district sells Mayan hot chocolate thats insane! You can drink it there or bring the mix home.

  • I have a little espresso machine so I make hot chocolate the same way I did in the coffee shop I worked. I put a big serving of fudge into the pot, whole milk, then I use the steam wand to mix. Amazing

  • Swiss miss with marshmallows :D and my Ugg slippers are the warmest things in the world when it's -35 outside! Love them!

  • I love a good hot chocolate - must be made with milk or it's not creamy enough for me.
    1) 1 cup of milk heated until almost boiling.
    2) In a mug mix 1 tbsp cocoa powder with 2 tbsp sugar, splash of vanilla extract and cinnamon (I sometimes omit the cinnamon depending on my mood). Add sprinkle of white chocolate chips and semi-sweet chocolate chips.
    3) Pour some (1/4 cup?) hot milk into the mug and stir up the contents until well mixed. Then add the rest of the milk stirring constantly until completely mixed and chocolate chips melted.
    4) top with whipped cream and some caramel syrup for extra decadence.

I don't like marshmallows that much, but sometimes I add a few vegan marshmallows if I have them on hand. (I'm vegetarian, thus the gelatin free marshmallows).

Now I need to go to costco to check out their instant mixes...I love Coffee Crisp and Aero bars, and miss them since they are hard to find in the US except for the import chocolate section at the grocery stores, at least near me. Crunchie bars are my fav, so whenever friends go to Canada I have them bring me back candy bars :)

I don't have a good rec for slippers, I mostly wear fuzzy socks or wool socks if it's REALLY cold. TMI: my feet sweat too much when I wear slippers or thick socks for very long, so until it's really cold I'm usually bare foot in the house.

  • I absolutely LURVE the candy-bar flavoured hot chocolate you get at Costco - it comes in After Eight (my favourite - mint and chocolate together!), Rolo, and Coffee Crisp.  They are SO GOOD!

As for slippers, the only thing I will ever wear are Padraig slippers:

    https://www.padraigcottage.com/

They have a nice, thick, sheepskin sole to keep feet away from cold floors, and the woolen uppers are so cozy.  Everyone in the family has a pair.  :)

  • Hot Cocoa
    Ingredients
    2 cups powdered sugar
    1 cup cocoa (Dutch-process preferred)
    2 1/2 cups powdered milk
    1 teaspoon salt
    2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 pinch cayenne pepper, or more to taste
    Hot water
    Directions
Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl and incorporate evenly. In a small pot, heat 4 to 6 cups of water.

Fill your mug half full with the mixture and pour in hot water. Stir to combine. Seal the rest in an airtight container, keeps indefinitely in the pantry. This also works great with warm milk.

  • @MapleMomma‌ do you have a pair of DeeFeets? Love those! Every time we go up to the IceMan I get several pairs!
  • The best ever hot chocolate is the hot chocolate served on the Polar Bear Express. If you don't want to ingest so many calories, the second best is the recipe on the side of the Fry's cocoa container.

As for slippers, down camp booties made by the north face or Sierra designs are so hot I can't wear them. You can likely buy them from backcountry.com

Polar Express Hot Chocolate (aka the BEST hot chocolate you’ve ever tasted) Recipe:
    –1.5 cups of heavy cream
–1 can of sweetened condensed milk (14 oz)
–2 cups of bittersweet chocolate chips
    –6 cups of milk
    –1 tsp vanilla extract
In a large pot over low heat, combine all of the above ingredients. Stir regularly for 30-40 minutes until chocolate is fully melted and incorporated with other ingredients.
  • Oh man @pudelpointer - This sounds like it definitely needs to be made on a really cold day to share with family ;)  Thanks for sharing!!

We can trade. There's only so little you can wear in public before you cause a scene. ;) can't wait to wear pants!

  • Not a Canadian but we live in Alaska so I think that counts for the purpose of this post. My favorite hot chocolate is from a local coffee cart but at home I like Swiss Miss. As for slippers I love my LL Bean ones, they keep my feet nice and warm when it's well below zero outside. Also maybe try some smart wool socks for when you have to go out.
