We currently have a nanny two days a week (she works with another family the other three days). She started out at $15.75 an hour and gave her a raise after 6 months to $16.25. The other family she works for just had a baby over the summer and - since the father is a teacher and she never works for them/gets paid by them over the summer - they didn't pay her while mom was on maternity leave. We have offered to pay her on federal holidays when my husband doesn't work but she refuses to be paid for hours that she didn't work (I know, it's a bit odd and sort of amazing.) So, two questions:
1. What is a fair offer to pay her when I'm on maternity leave? We love her, but she sort of drives me crazy so I am not at all considering having her be home with me while I'm home, even to take care of DD. I don't think she expects to be paid and may refuse it anyway, but curious what you think I should offer. For what it's worth, I don't get paid maternity leave, though I know a daycare center would expect full fees for DD even if she didn't go.
2. How much more would be reasonable to pay her per hour? We were thinking another $1 an hour raise when the new baby comes?
What do you think?
Re: How much more to pay a nanny for the second kid?
Last August they had their third child, and again had me come for a couple hours a few days a week. Luckily my husband and I are in a position where the drop in income didn't hurt us too bad.
Will she be able to stay on with you if she is not getting paid while you are on leave? If so, I would use her just a few hours a week so you can get stuff done, get some rest, etc. Also, from a nanny perspective, it would be nice for her to have opportunities to bond with the new baby before coming back full time.
Sorry that was really long, hope that helps!
