Update: 40 weeks, 2 days & counting... (Cervadil & pitocin)

I am a FTM and have a NST and fluid check scheduled for Monday and a follow up appt. on Thursday.... If I am still not dilated, I will be admitted overnight to initiate cervadil and then pitocin Friday morning for induction.. I am worried about being induced, even though my doc is reassuring me these are natural and will not harm the baby.. I think I am most nervous about possibly needing a c section as I was hoping to deliver vaginally. Anyone have to go through this and can give me some support and let me know how you made out? Also, doc stated baby is probably going too be 9lbs or so.. How often are these estimates accurate? I ask because my sis was told 8 1/2lbs for her first, but he came out 10lbs 8oz and ended up splitting her pelvis :( Thanks in advance! Update: went in today and was 1cm dialated... She stripped my membranes (OUCH) and became 2cm, so the good news is I don't have to be admitted tonight for cervadil!! I go in for pitocin tomorrow morning at 5:30am! I can't believe I am going to be a mom, this is blowing my mind!!! Ahh I am so excited, nervous, psyched and scared all at the same time... Shit just got real!! :)

  • I plan on getting an epidural... Is that a problem when being induced?

  • Omg he split her pelvis! Holy crap that's awful. Yes from what I've read sizes usually off so hopefully your baby isn't bigger than what they're saying. My baby was estimated around 9, she came out 8 lbs 11 ounces.

Have they tried stripping your membranes? Once I hit 40 weeks they did it twice. I got to 3 cm dilated, 90% effaced before they started the pitocin. Once on pitocin I got to 5 cm fine, then horrible pain started and I got the epidural. Delivered naturally and labor was only 15 hours altogether which isn't bad. Pitocin took a while to take effect.

Honestly I felt induction went great! You should be fine. Hopefully you don't need a c section but if you do its not the end of the world. Maybe you'll be dilated before Thursday? :)
  • Unless you have other medical issues I might not agree to the induction. DS arrived all by himself at 41w2d. My induction was slated for the very next day.

Failed inductions happen & sometimes "just wait" truly is the answer.

  • FWIW, there is growing evidence that getting an epidural does not lead to stalled labor or an increased risk of C-section, regardless of the point at which you get the epidural.

Here are two blog entries by an anesthesiologist on the topic:

    https://theadequatemother.wordpress.com/2012/02/15/epidurals-and-progression-of-labour/

    https://theadequatemother.wordpress.com/2013/02/04/2-cm-810/

I wish I'd read these blog posts before having DS. If I had, I would have gotten the epidural much earlier than waiting until I hit 4cm (at which point I was in so much pain and so exhausted that I remember very little of DS's birth).

Anyway, I was induced for hypertension. Got Cytotec the night before to ripen my cervix, Pitocin in the morning. I also had an epidural, after which my labor progressed pretty rapidly (I was actually sort of mad because I'd wanted to rest longer before I started pushing). I pushed for about 40 mins and had a relatively uncomplicated vaginal delivery.

    Good luck, OP.
  • I was induced with cytotec and pitocin, had the epidural at 3 cm, and had my baby in my arms less than 4 hours later. It actually would have been sooner but no one was ready to catch the baby because my labor went so quickly. I was terrified to be induced too, and cried the whole morning before, but had an amazing birth experience. Best of luck--there are good outcomes!

  • With my son i was induced with cervadil and pitocin. The dr talked me into getting my epi At only 2 cm. I stalled out at 7.5 cm and had a c section after 22 hours of hard labor. I say wait

At 40 weeks, 6 days I started a Pitocin drip at 6:00am and my Doctor told me to get the epidural whenever I wanted and sooner was probably better. He broke my water and I asked for the epidural right after around 11:00am. I did not progress much and stalled around 5pm at 4cm. I had a C-Section. In all honestly after 12 hours of bags of fluid being pumped into me I was so swollen and miserable. I am so glad I won't ever be going through that again. For me I did not enjoy the experience and had a longer recovery because of being induced 12 hours prior to my C-Section. The C-Section part was a breeze compared to the 12 hours of fluids I took in.

  • I was induced with cytotec. Had my first dose at 7, second dose at 11, water broke at 5 and at 9:51 my son was delivered vaginally. No epidural and no pitocin needed.

So there you go...a complication free induction story :)
