Any recommendations on a strainer?  I am looking into buying my own this year, and I am not sure what kind to get.  The reviews on Amazon are contradictory as always.

Also, any recommendations on apples would be appreciated!  I think I used a mix of galas and jonathans last year.

  • Yes, Foley food mill!

  • I tried a Foley, and it was a huge PITA.  Maybe I'm not doing something right?  It took me an hour just to get like 3 quarts of applesauce.

  • I like a combination of galas and macs. But I'll make applesauce out of anything. I do add cinnamon (and nutmeg!), but no sugar. My favorite way to eat it is when the applesauce is warm and I mix it in bowl with cold vanilla yogurt. OMG, delicious.

  • I can my own applesauce, but I only blend it.  Call me crazy, but all I do is core it and cook 'er up.  I cook it in a pot with water and blend it all.  The skin blends down that I cannot detect it in the sauce.
  • It took me way longer than it should have to understand the title of this thread. I was like, of COURSE anyone can applesauce, especially if they buy it in pouches like I do! :-bd

    lol...Anyone can applesauce!!!

Thanks for the feedback.  I think I am going to buy this:  Victorio food strainer.
The reviews say that you don't have to peel or core the apples, which is huge, and it looks like it will work for tomatoes and pumpkin too.  I'll let you know how it goes.

  • My mom has that one and had been using it for as long as I can remember. It works really well :-)

    Care to share the details?
