Oscar, Henry & baby girl (seriously doubting my #1 choice, help!)

Fiona is my #1 choice for our baby girl. I'm due in a couple of months but it has recently come to my attention that there are not 1, but 2 Fionas in my eldest' school. He's in JK and they are both in SK. What we loved about Oscar is that we weren't familiar with any child with that name when we gave it to him. We only knew of one Henry but he was a grown man. I'm just wondering if I should reconsider one of my other names or stick with Fiona. My hubby also likes our long ago favourite Lydia but I know my mom has a bad association with this name. I just want to make sure I don't screw up naming our one and only baby girl. I want a French middle name as mine is French (Noelle) and Im a Christmas baby and our daughter will be late November.

  • I love the name Fiona!

  • I love Fiona, and don't know many (and I work at a school--there are none here).  I didn't vote because I like Fiona Camille best, but without a nickname.  Fiona is so pretty and I would totally use it if I could (our last name starts with an O).

  • I really like Fiona Noelle. I don't know any Fionas IRL.

  • I think you should stick to your guns and go with the name you like so you don't have future regrets.

Unfortunately, you are never going to achieve total originality in a name (unless you make up something hidious). Someone, someone where...is going to have had the name before.  I don't think 2 with the same name is that bad and it could be a coincidence. Regardless stick with the name you love.

I love my first name.  Apparently it was popular that year. In an elementry classroom of 30, there were 3 of us.  I still love my name and wouldn't change it.  I actually meet very few peope my age with my first name as an adult.
  • I think Fiona is the best name for you. I've never met a Fiona IRL, so I'd consider it to be the most unique of your options. Have you considered Joelle as a mn? It would still be obviously inspired by your name, but I like it better for two reasons:

     1. Fiona Noelle has a lot of n's.
    2. Noelle does seem more likely for a December baby because of the Christmas thing.

I adore the name Noelle no matter what though. I think since it is a mn, no one will hold the Christmas thing against you. Just thought "Fiona Joelle" had a nice ring to it. Good luck!

  • I think I am on an American forum (I did that on purpose years ago for more anonymity, lol) but I live in Canada and I haven't heard any until recently and both at his school. :( But I still love it and it's still the favourite.
  • I agree about the many Ns thing. That's why I am leaning towards Fiona Camille. :)
  • The nn Lydie kills me. It is so cute!!! So Lydia Noelle got my vote. Beautiful name with a cute nickname! Love it

  • Just as a nod to Fiona not being that common, I also work at an elementary school with 900 children in grades 4-6 and we have one Fiona!

I also know one 5 year old Fiona who is a family friend's daughter.

All in all, less popular than Henry around here (there are probably 25+ in my school).

  • Go with Fiona. It's not top 10, and I don't personally know any kids named Fiona (as opposed to the 7 or 8 Sophias I know).
I'm not a fan of your mn choices. Maybe play around with some other French mn?

  • I actually really like Lydia Camille the best.

  • I think you have beautiful choices! I, myself am partial to Violet but feel like you can't go wrong with whatever you choose.

  • I chose Fiona Camille because it's the exact flip of my DD's name.  When people found out her name, we got many comments on how original it was...so many people loved Fiona.  I'll add that I had a college roommate named Fiona and I thought it was so unique and beautiful.  That's how it ended up being my girl's MN.

  • I like Fiona Noelle, it sounds really nice (I don't know any Fiona's where I'm from). I also like Camilla Noelle and Violet (Violet Noelle, Violet Camille, Violet etc, many names sound good with it)
  • I love Fiona, but I don't like the nn Fia.
Started adoption process in Jan. 2011.
    3 failed matches in 2012.
    Surprise pregnancy in Aug. 2012.
Precious baby boy "HC" born May 2013.
    Began researching EA in 2014.
No longer pursuing EA due to fibroid complications.
Officially on the adoption home study wait list.

  • I love Lydia. I much prefer it to Fiona and especially with the nn Fia. However, I think it would depend on why your mother has a bad association with it. If it was just some woman from twenty years ago that she didn't like then definitely Lydia but if it is a legitimate serious thing then I would go with Fiona and drop the nickname.

  • I love Fiona on its own too. I can just see us shortening it here and there but not sure how. Maybe it will be Fi/Fille?

Lydia is still beautiful but Oscar's bf is our next door neighbour's daughter Lilly and I now feel it is too close. Lydia will get Liddy/Lydie and it sounds copycat to me.
