Cloth Diapering

Wash question: HE washer

My sister in law just picked up prefolds, 2 bummis, and 1 thirsty covers. She also picked up a pocket diaper with cotton/hemp inserts. The inserts are thirsty, and the pocket is dry bees.

I was telling her how to wash, and what detergent I use, tide original.
She says she can't use powder detergent in her HE washer. That they have to buy special HE liquid detergent.

I have no idea about this, so I'm coming to ya'll.

What is a good detergent for her to use in her washer? Would liquid detergent really do a number on her prefolds? Would they be more prone to get build up?
Should she still do the cold rinse, hot wash, cold rinse routine?

I use tide he powder. I am pretty she you can use any he detergent in any he machine. Unless there is really a liquid specific machine but I don't think they is true! For my to lots he machine this is my wash:

Warm speed wash with no detergent

Regular cotton cycle in hot with two extra rinses with detergent.

Oh yeah! I have an lg he top loader.

Yeah tide makes an HE powder and my guess is that her washer probably has directions for powder detergent printed inside the lid just like most washers do.

I have a top load HE washer and I use powdered HE tide in the regular dispenser.

  • OK
She's got a front loader, would that matter?

I have no idea about her settings, can someone recommend a good wash routine for her?

  • I have a front loader and it can use powder.

  • The powder just has to have the HE symbol on the front of the packaging and goes in the dispenser just like the liquid. She can always check her owners guide for instructions. I have had to refer to mine quite a few times.

  • A lot of appliance repair people do discourage powder detergents in he machines. She can dissolve it in a jar of water if it makes her feel better.

  • I have a HEFL, I use powder tide.

I do the rinse and spin, extra rinse option.
Normal wash, tide to 1 line, extra rinse option, extra soon option.

  • I think my LG says not to use powdered detergent, but I do it anyway. I just add it to the drum instead of the detergent slot, although I have put it in the slot before and it didn't cause any problems. I think sometimes it can clump up if it doesn't dissolve, and this may be why some people recommend against powder in an HE machine. If she's really concerned, there are some liquid detergents that are CD safe...Allen's Naturally is the only one I can think of right now, though.

Ditto for me, except I have a Samsung. I haven't heard of a washer that ONLY takes liquid.

ETA: Maybe she doesn't realize that it can take powder bc the dispenser says "liquid dispenser"? Like PP said, she would just need to remove that part and put the powder underneath.
