Formal wear for a company gala

I have an upcoming company gala in October and I will be 19 weeks. I'm a FTM so I have no real idea of what to expect(size of my bump) other than everyone telling me I will "pop" at 18-20 weeks. For the gala I need to wear formal attire, I would prefer a long dress over a two piece. I was wondering on your opinion for attire. Should I attempt for a loose fitting and stretchy regular dress, or maternity? And if your vote is maternity, what stores carry formal maternity dresses?

Re: Formal wear for a company gala

  • Empire waist with flowing skirt would be my advice. It's hard to say how your bump will grow. Unless you want to show it off then something cute from maternity would work and you could potentially use it for the holidays. I'm a FTM too, but that would be my thought process.

  • Oh they will also overnight you a different dress if both of your dresses don't fit.

  • @cesquer‌ it is perfect for weddings. I have 2 weddings the next 2 weekends and I am ordering a dress for both.

  • I would do maternity for sure. With my first pregnancy I needed maternity at 18-20 weeks. And you would probably feel more comfortable in it. Check out Nordstroms or ASOS they both have a great selection of formal maternity.

How formal are we talking? Where do you live and what time of day is the event and where? Are we talking cocktails at the rooftop bar in Scottsdale, AZ or a charity auction at The Met?

Its not as formal a needing a gown, but men should be suits and ladies in suits or long dresses. Coworkers tell me no one wore short dresses last year if that helps any. I've never done anything formal, except homecoming freshman year of HS if that counts @-)

It'll be at night, at the national harbor in MD, indoors

Check out rent the runway. At least that way you can order a dress closer to the date and kind of know your size. They dont have maternity but I still do it all the time. I love rent the runway. They will send you 2 sizes of one dress just in case so it's a good option. I'm still my regular size and I'm 15 weeks but I still order my regular size and one size up.
huh, very interesting. I will definitely be taking a look! Thanks
  • I agree with the Rent the Runway suggestion. They are a fabulous company and have awesome dresses. I have rented numerous times and never had issues! They also save you from having to spend the money of buying a formal gown. I also noticed today online that pea in the pod has a couple formal dresses on their website.

  • @LBeez13‌ @tiktak @mayv314‌ it def sounds like rent the runway may be the way to go! Thanks ladies
  • update on Rent the Runway, theres only one bump friendly dress on the entire website. I didn't change any other preferences. =((
  • Don't worry about the bump friendly. I still order dresses that aren't bump friendly until I have a huge bump. Just look through pics or read reviews on which dresses have some stretch to them. I don't imagine you will have a huge bump at 19 weeks(everyone is diff but i didnt get a huge bump until much later) and can still make a lot of dresses work.

    Weird, I came up with 34 floor-length, bump-friendly gowns

That's weird. I just went and searched, and I got at least 30 results when I filtered to bump friendly.

That's super weird. I'm gonna take another look now...

However, I just remembered I stocked up on black maternity dresses yesterday so perhaps one of those will do the job.

  • Huh, I must have gotten myself stuck in a section of the website earlier because this time about 30 dresses popped up aswell! Glad I took a second look, thanks for the replies!

I'd say avoid a cotton jersey fabric, then. And I think Rent the Runway or Nordstrom are probably your best bet. Seraphine has some really nice stuff but frankly, I think $400 for a maternity gown is too much if you won't use it much after this event. If you go to Nordstrom, ask for a stylist to help you (not someone working the floor -- the actual personal shopping/stylist department). It's a free service but they can help you find things that will be seasonally, and event appropriate and will work on your body for your situation.
I thought cotton jersey wouldn't be good either, but I bought a dress 4 months ago for my brothers wedding, and it's flowy and beautiful. It hid my post-partum tummy very well.
I wore this dress in eggplant.

I suggest David's Bridal- that way you can try the dresses on and decide for yourself.

  • One more fan of Rent the Runway here. I ordered 2 dresses from them for an upcoming wedding. This being my second pregnancy, I thought I might be showing some by then (16 weeks), but based on my size now, I doubt it. Either way, I chose dresses that seemed like they would work well either way based on reviews. I've use RTR when not pregnant and been very pleased. Good luck finding something!
