April 2014 Moms

Needing to go back to work :o(

DH & I are moving at the end of October (out of state). We are SUPER excited about this move, it is for my hubby's job. DH has been supporting us 100% since DD was born, but now we are moving to a nicer area so our rent is probably going to double. Also, he is paying of a six figure school loan from his MBA that he just graduated from May 2013 so there are many years left on it. He is stressed about money and we often get into fights about it.

I've said I will go back to work full time (I really don't want to) but he doesn't want me doing that either (phew) but I will work PT. I am a fitness instructor and personal trainer so that will be perfect to pick up more hours and I can be selective. I used to teach alot but haven't since I was put on bed rest back in Feb. But, I love it and am ready to get back! I am hoping to work about 15-20hours a week or so. Now that DD is nearing 6months, I've been lucky to spend every day with her. Since we are currently living in the middle of nowhere and don't have any family or friends, it's literally the two of us all the time. I am feeling alot of guilt when I think about having to leave her with either a sitter or at daycare while I work some. I know I am very lucky that I don't have to do this 40 hours a week, but she has been my everything, my entire day since she was born. I feel guilty not being the one to do everything with her.....

  • Don't feel guilty! I work full-time and while it was hard at first and still is somewhat, I felt like an actual person again once I went back to work. Good luck, you'll be just fine :)

  • It is hard to go back to work, and I think it gets harder to imagine going to work the longer you are home. But the anticipation tends to be a lot worse than actually going to work. With my first I was so stressed about it over my ML that I cried a lot. It was hard actually leaving him at first but not nearly as bad as my emotions leading up to it.

Once I was working I really did not want to be at first and I was angry about it and built up some crazy resentment against my DH. Which was completely counterproductive. I had to really make myself change my mindset and focus on the positives vs. the negatives of me working.

This time I think I cried once during my ML and that was it. I know she is in good hands and I spend all the quality time I can with her when I am not working. Plus as they get older they love having little friends and they do a lot of fun things in DC/preschool.

Working will be better for your family overall than being stressed about money and fighting with your DH. That certainly impacts your LO as well.

GL! Also the working moms board is great. I have been on that board for years.

  • What sparky said is spot-on, the apprehension can be worse than actually going back to work. I've done it twice now. With DS1, I went back full-time when he was 12 wks old, and it was horrid. He didn't sleep well, I wasn't ready, and I had a miserable zombie-like first few months back. But I adjusted to it. With DS2, I went back part-time and it's been great. I think with you going back with an older baby and working part-time, that'll make it easier. I wish I could work part-time forever, it really is awesome.

  • As a fitness instructor you have tons of options! You could find a place with daycare so you teach a class, check in on her and go back to teach again later. You have lots of options as far as scheduling and hours, so it might actually be nice to get away for a few hours but not be completely relying on daycare.
    Good luck!
  • Thanks ladies... I agree, I think being home with her everyday since she's been born & almost 6months now is harder because I don't know any different. Right now I do go to the gym 6 days a week to workout on my own (I teach 1 spin class a week only as of the moment). She stays in the gym daycare. So, I will be increasing these hours now & also since we are moving we will be at new gyms so I have to get used to new sitters now too!
