Cloth Diapering

Bac out question.....

So we are temporarily in sposies. While I have my entire stash clean, I'd like to wash with bac out to try and get rid of some stink issues.

How do I add the bac out? How much? Should i add anything else? (He fl, ~25 pocket with natural inserts and ~10 prefolds)

FYI:
My stink issue is that the diapers smell dirty after being wet for a little while. Not knock your socks off, but stingier than they should. No amonia stink.

My routine is quick wash on warm with extra rinse and agitation. Normal wash on hot with extra rinse and agitation. I have tried nellies and Allen's with not great success. All small and might f&c seems to get them clean, I just have to be careful not to add too much.

Diapers have been recently bleached and hot water stripped. This helped the stink, but came back really fast :(

Re: Bac out question.....

  • I haven't personally had a lot of luck with Bac Out actually solving problems.  In my experience, Bac Out is better at preventing problems.  I use it in the first rinse of my wash routine.

I had pretty good luck doing a soak with washing soda to get rid of a stink problem that sounds similar to what you have.  I think you ultimately need to change up your wash routine to get your diapers completely clean, though.  A detergent change is probably in order.

  • @stoneycakes‌ thanks, since they are all 'clean' I may just do a full wash/bleach/hot water rinses again.

I started with All S&M then switched to Allen's, then to Nellies, now back to All S&M. The All definitely works better.

Is 1 ounce of bac out too much for a full washer? (I got the full strength bottle, no directions other than saturate soiled areas.....)

  • I never measured, but just kind of squirted and swirled the bottle around the washer once or twice.  I probably used a 1/4 cup give or take, which is 2 oz.
  • Take my advice with a grain of salt, too, because we had super hard water.
  • I agree that I don't think Bac Out will really fix an existing issue.  I tried that for a while and it didn't seem to affect much.  It sounds like you may need RLR or Funk Rock.....something that's really going to get all the "gunk" out of the dipes if you have buildup.

  • I'm wondering if your detergent is the problem. F&C detergents contain ingredients that are likely to cause problems. https://www.jilliansdrawers.com/resources/detergentsforclothdiapers
  • I agree with trying funk rock by rockin green. I have hard water and between their hard rock formula and the occasional funk rock my diapers tend to stay icky free
