Trouble TTC

RE Diagnosis

Hi ladies! I have been away for awhile due to my grandma passing away and having to travel. I am back home now, and getting back into the swing of things. I had my RE visit to discuss all of my test results on my way out of town last week and am curious of your opinions. After all of my tests the doctor says she is confident in diagnosing my with PCOS and hypothyroid. She wants me to go on Metformin and Levothyroxine. She is also letting me choose if I want to use Clomid or Femara for my first medicated cycle. DH's SA came back good except for low morphology (2.5%), so she is suggesting we use IUI when we cycle. Is there anything DH can do to help his morphology numbers? My doctor told me about the recent study (which I had already seen thanks to @PeanutRN and @rainbowbridge14) saying that Femara was more effective in women with PCOS. I am currently thinking that I will start with Femara. I hate that Clomid is cheaper and money comes into play, but even the cheapskate in me thinks I should go Femara. I don't want to care about money when my health and fertility are on the line! I will also be going on progesterone after IUI. This has been a lot to take in, but I am glad I can start to do something after these last 2 years!

Re: RE Diagnosis

  • Every insurance is different, but femara is actually cheaper for me than clomid was!

I personally like Femara better (I don't have PCOS).  I just like the way I feel on it.

    Good luck!!

  • @rainbowbridge14

Thanks for the advice the suggestion of goodrx.com. I will check it out. My DH is in management at Wal-Mart, so if insurance will cover Femara it has to be from their pharmacy. If we have to pay ourselves I will shop around. I have a call into the insurance company to see if they are going to cover a % of it.

My RE suggested DH add antioxidants into his diet. He already takes a multivitamin, so we have that covered. DH actually complained about having to eat more antioxidants, but then we had a nice long chat about all the things I have to do. ;)

  • Thanks for sharing your experience, @DarcyHermione! If you don't mind and since you said insurance didn't cover it for you, did you use any prescription savings? I know I can afford to pay for the meds, but I am wanting to be as fiscally responsible as I can.

  • Thanks, @DarcyHermione! My doctor had me all freaked out saying it would be several 100$. I should learn not to listen to doctors, I really should know better. Wishing you lots of luck!

  • Sorry for losing your grandma :( My husband has poor morphology and motility. I have him taking Fertilaid. What @rainbowbridge14‌ said about additional supplements. Although, I also heard morph is the hardest thing to improve. My H also takes Vitamin D. Glad you have a plan, good luck!

  • Sorry about your grandma.

Femara has less chance of multiple follies than Clomid, but far fewer side effects, include those related to health and implantation.

I'm surprised Clomid seems to be the first plan of action for OBs - it's like they're stuck in the 1950s when there wasn't a choice!

To be fair, Clomid does turn out to get a better response for many people. Good luck with whatever you choose!

Low morph here too. Although DH's count and motility have been all over the place (mostly low), his morph has stayed a steady 2%. :(

  • Hi @lovesmonkey!  I'm sorry for your loss :(  I'm new here but we seem to be in similar situations - I was just this past week diagnosed with PCOS.  I also just got some blood work back and my TSH is elevated so I think we will be looking deeper into that (my labs were posted on my online account, I haven't talked to anyone yet).  Anyways, I am very new to all of this so I don't have much advice to give besides my RE said if we go that route, they will definitely want me on femara and not clomid.  We didn't go in too depth on the discussion since we still have a lot of testing to do.

  • I also have PCOS, but did Clomid first. I absolutely hated it. (Ended up throwing my wedding rings at my DH because I was a crazy person....) So, I prefer Femara. I personally didn't have any side effects, but it also didn't "work" for me.. No follicles present. Good luck to you!
