Down syndrome screening

Just got back results they called me and said my baby has a 1/1243 chance and that I need to get an ultrasound to confirm the baby doesn't have Down syndrome ? Any one else get told the same I'm worried I know it may seem like a low chance but it's my first child and anything and everything worries me I cried and I just pray all is well.

Re: Down syndrome screening

  • I feel like that is a long shot (no expert here) but I had the NT scan a few weeks ago- that's probably what you will have? My friend had a baby boy with downs about 6 months ago and he is a beautiful baby inside and out. "It's just an extra chromosome"

  • You're are right ! I know I am no expert either and that does seem like a long shot just very scary to hear that, but whatever god gives me I'll always be happy with and love the baby regardless. Thanks for your response makes things a lot better to know people out here care. Xo
  • Are you about 25 yrs old? That statistic sounds like your risk just based on your age. It sounds like whatever blood test was run came back normal, and they are just offering you the NT screen for further info. I would ask them to clarify. I really think you just got offered a standard screening test that ALL women are offered.

My risk based on age was about 1/1000. I chose to have screening & results showed my risk dropped to 1/10,000.
  • Yes I'm 22 and basically the lady just said that it was good the 1/1243 they just needed to do that ultrasound to be sure. I scheduled it anyways because I was just really scared and already worried I didn't know what else to think but you're right they really should !
  • I did a non invasive screening, and regardless of the results, my dr also recommended the NT scan. While my risks are high, due to my "advanced maternal age" I do think many dr just do this as the standard. Luckily the screening came back normal, and my ultrasound today confirmed that everything looks good at this point. I wouldn't stress, instead enjoy getting to see your babe on the big screen!
  • That's great I'm glad to hear that it went well for you!!! I have my ultrasound tomorrow morning all I can do is pray for the best thanks a lot :)
  • I think the statistic they have you is just based on your age! I wouldn't worry! :)
  • Thank you for the positive response :) you have no idea how much this means to me to head that stuff !
  • I wouldn't worry. FX that you have a great u/s!
  • You don't need to worry unless the US gives you a reason to. My chance of having a baby with DS is something like 1/1000 because I'm 30, but my ultrasound showed several markers for DS one one of my twins. It's basically like rolling the dice. Hoping for great news for you!

These are all stats. I had a great NT test odds of 1/10000. And still ended up with a child with Ds. Congrats on the good news.
  • Glad to hear things went well!
  • Squirmworms - did you have blood work, cvs, or amino that indicated Downs... or did you not know until your little ones arrival?

I had the standard blood tests at 12 weeks and the NT ultrasound and also the A/S.  No markers just short legs which was not worry some since DH and I are both short.  Having a child is really no big deal.  Just extra work having them get to their milestones.  She really is awesome. I was also AMA.  You can always PM me if you want to talk.
