Pain in upper abdomen

I've had this annoying pain in the center of my abdomen, right below the center of my chest. Feels like a pulled muscle and I'm assuming that's what it is. I also get what feels like side stitches every so often. Is it easy to pull a muscle there? Is this worth a call to the doctor or should I just take it easy? I just don't remember having anything like this with my previous pregnancies.

Re: Pain in upper abdomen

  • Does gas hurt if you touch it? Lol

  • I have a similar pain in my upper stomach which is also pretty bloated and I didn't have that problem with DD. If you feel unsure of whether it's dr worthy I would err on the side of caution and call the dr. It's better safe than sorry right

I have a similar pain and wasn't sure if it was indigestion or something else. I've noticed the pain intensifies every time I eat a lot, so I was going to try do smaller meals and see if that helps!

It could be a pulled muscle. Is it possible that your body is making room for baby and things are getting little squished?

If mine keeps bothering me, I plan to call the doctor. In the mean time, if it's bothering you and causing you lots of pain, better to call. Keep us posted!

  • My 2 year old is pretty rough and I'm pretty bloated so I'm going to assume a pulled muscle coupled with gas. It hurts when I bend and twist which is why I'm thinking muscle. I just hate calling over something silly. If it persists over the weekend I'll call on Monday. Thanks :)
  • Maybe some slight acid reflux too? If it's not too late where you are I'd just call the nurse at your doctors office ad leave a message.

  • I don't know about a pulled muscle...but recently I've had this painful feeling in my upper abdomen/lower chest area. it feel like I swallowed a rock. That's the best way I can describe it.. Almost like when you accidentally swallow something without chewing and it goes down real hard and feels "stuck". And it's very painful and sometimes radiates to my side. So I figured possibly indigestion, and would try tums. Although I have never felt indigestion like that before, it just felt like a rock. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't, so I don't actually know what it is. But I would try some kind of antacid first and maybe see if it gets better. Hope you feel better!

  • Maybe have your gall bladder checked! Gall bladder problems happen a lot in pregnancy. I had to have mine removed and I was experiencing the same thing as you.
  • I agree with claireanne, you should check your gallbladder out! Happened to me. Hormones can offset it. Very commen in pregnancy.

If it was your gallbladder I believe you would feel it on your upper right side. At least that's what I gathered from my last hospital stay. If it's more central then I would be inclined to agree with pps on acid reflux. It truly can be terrible. It could also be an ulcer, god forbid.
Edit because I said "yor". How embarrassing.

  • I second the ulcer comment that's exactly what my ulcer feels like to me :(
  • I have no gallbladder or appendix so at least I'm sure it's not those! Lol I think you guys might be right on the indigestion/reflux. It's completely gone, for now at least. If it comes back then I'll know it wasn't a muscle. I've never felt heartburn so low :(
  • Haha okay then I think we can rule those out! :p I got a prescription for protonix about a week ago after my acid was getting so bad I was waking up in the middle of the night choking on it. Super unpleasant. Point being it seems like it's working marvelously. Don't suffer too long if you don't have to! I hope you feel better very soon.

  • Because you said its right in the middle I'd say its probably heartburn. I had a pain a bit more to the left in between ribs and I think it was something pulled or my ribs were expanding to make room for baby. I know I usually go up a size in bras even band width so that could be to consider. It felt annoying for a couple days then went away!

  • I just made the mistake of googling ulcers. Not a great idea on an already queasy stomach.

The pain isn't a burning kind of pain. It's like a bruise pain. Or soreness. Can reflux/acid feel like that?
