Does sex cause cramping in the third trimester?

We don't have sex often because I don't usually have a sex drive and sometimes can be uncomfortable, but when we did today it was painful. I'm 36 weeks and after having sex with my husband I was getting painful cramping that kept coming back. It hurt so bad I couldn't sit up, I had to lay down. Is there something potentially wrong, are those contractions, or is this just the norm for the next few weeks?

If it subsides and doesn't come back all night, then I wouldn't worry about it with regard to going into labor. I have had some very painful moments during sex (or after sex) with DH while pregnant, and other times where there is no pain at all. I think it is very normal, and depends on where the baby is positioned, whether your belly has just gone through a bit of a growth spurt, and other things that you normally wouldn't notice.

I get the exact same thing a lot during and after sex and i feel for you because I know how painful it can be (sometimes the cramping can get so painful that I literally can't move for a while afterwards) but it's completely normal to experience this in your 3rd trimester.
