When starting solids....

Do you wean off milk more? DD is FF, do I give her the same amounts in her bottles? Do I start to eliminate bottles? FTM very confused with the transition!

Re: When starting solids....

  • Thanks!! We've started on oatmeal as of last week, just 1 tbsp a day mixed with formula. Most of it is ending up on her & her bib so I've been keeping the same bottle schedule. Not sure when she will "get it" that you swallow the food, but thinking more of what to do when that point comes.

    And now I want cake

  • Loading the player...
  • She lunges with mouth open to the spoon and "chomps" on it...but then most dribbles out.

  • I agree about the tongue reflex. However, my babies all liked their purées rather thick. Perhaps she's in the same camp. Maybe try adding less liquid?

  • We do 1Tbsp of rice cereal mixed with formula.  Josh likes it a little thicker too.  We don't wait 45-60 minutes between cereal and formula, it's all the same meal.  I imagine the remainder of his formula helps to wash the cereal down.  I know I have a hard time eating food without  a drink.

  • By 7-8 months you should start to see a decrease in formula daily oz count. By 12 months you should be down to maybe 12-16oz daily so it can be replaced by an equivalent volume of milk once you wean off formula.
  • My LO has been having bits of purée food I wouldn't eliminate any bottles
  • We started just shy (like a week) of 6 months with DD. We'll probably start at 6 with DS (so 2 weeks from now -- ahhhh TIME). I'd say it took a good month for DD to start really swallowing things and another before she was eating more than a few bites a day. At 10 months, I swear she was eating man-sized portions (we BLW) for some meals. I think by a year she was just nursing 2 times a day, sometimes with one or two sessions thrown in there for comfort.
