Need Advice: Nursing while Pregnant

Anyone nurse while pregnant? I still nurse my 14 month old twice a day and I am recently pregnant. My nipple (not plural because I only feed from one side) BURNS in pain when he latches on.

He doesn’t need to nurse to go to sleep so if I wean him, that won’t be an issue. But, I like nursing him (when it didn’t hurt) and like that he is still getting some antibodies and still getting the benefits of nursing but this pain is almost unbearable.

Any advice? Should I wean? Does the painful nipples get better as pregnancy goes on?

Also, one more question….is it just a myth that breastfeeding while pregnant ups your chances of miscarriage because of uterine contractions or something??

  • I was in the same situation and chose to wean. It was sad, but I could look forward to nursing the new baby.
    My TTC History:

That's kinda what I'm leaning towards but I feel very sad about it.

  • @Altima80‌ I am 18 weeks pregnant and still nursing at least twice a day both sides. I'm not sure how far along you are, but it was very painful for me at the beginning of my pregnancy.
I decided to keep nursing but cut down the time if it was really painful. My DD is 14 months too and just isn't ready. She's a boob fanatic. :D
I am not sure when she'll wean honestly, but I've heard your milk changes around mid pregnancy for many people.
Good luck with whatever you decide. I am more than happy to answer any other questions you may have. Congrats on your BFP!
  • Thanks for the advice, everyone! I might continue to tough it out and see how it goes. I know I conceived on August 23 or 25 so that would make me how far along? Do you go by date of your last period or by when you think you conceived? I never know.

LO just dive bombs at me at night at bedtime when he sees me sitting in the nursing chair. He knows what's up and I feel really bad cutting that from him so I hope it gets better. @crash916, how long did it take for it to stop hurting you?

I've also heard milk changes and usually drys up. How do you know if your milk is drying up? Does LO start getting upset if there is no milk? Do they start biting? My nips hurt just thinking about it...

  • @Altima80 the pain got better around 10 weeks for me. It still flares up especially with teething.
