I know its typical with newborns, but any tips? If I don't try arousing my baby she will sleep most of the day away. She is wetting and pooping so I haven't been worried about dehydration.
Had the same issue with my 1 mth old. Besides the keeping lights on and regular noise during the day and dark and quiet at night. We woke every 3.5 hrs to eat and right around 5 would make extra effort to keep her awake.
Like PPs said, day time is light and not quiet, night time is dark with no real interactions or talking. I don't let DD nap for more than 3 hours during the daytime, and once I started that I noticed an improvement at night almost immediately. For night time feedings, I usually do a diaper change halfway thru the feeding, so at the end when she's drowsy from eating she can just go straight to sleep (and she has enough in her belly that she doesn't get all worked up during the diaper change either, wanting to eat).
First off he sleeps in a different place for his naps than he does at bedtime. I have him in an infant rocker in my living room during nap time. Make sure that rooms are bright during the day(lights on curtains open) and that rooms are dark at night.
When you wake your baby up to eat during the day dont just let them go right back to sleep. Talk or sing to them while they eat and play with them for awhile afterwards. My son stays awake for awhile now because he likes to play with me. At night you have to do the opposite, don turn on the lights when feeding, also don engage them in any way, no singing, talking, or even eye contact at all really. Just feed them and put them back to bed.
In addition to having my son sleep in a different place for naps than he does a bedime, i also only swaddle him at bed time.
It also helps to have a specific bedtime routine different from what you do at nap time and to pay attention to how babies react to cerain activities. For example for bedtime my son gets a clean diaper, he gets swaddled then eats his bottle. By the time hes done eating hes ready to go right to sleep vs nap time where i just put him down when hes ready to sleep, and dont let them sleep more than 4 hrs straight since they need to eat, my son usually sleeps for two - three hrs then i have him stay awake until his cues say he needs to sleep. Also I noticed early on that bathing makes him super alert so I never do it before bed, I do it usually in the morning after he gets up. Mostly its all about having one routine for night time and one for day time, it wont be insant but they will adjust.
