BF issues- WWYD?

Mostly a lurker here but I need advice...
My LO is a month old and has been EBF. I think I have an oversupply and an overactive let down. He is really gassy and seems like he has an upset stomach a lot. He often has green poo. When he eats I have to recline so he does not choke and he often gets frustrated and won't nurse after a burp. Anyway, his peditrician said he was fine and that I should just pump the extra milk. I tried contacting the hospital's LC but she has never returned my calls. I don't want to make my oversupply worse, I'm miserable as it is. What would you do?!?

  • I am by no means an expert, but you might want to read this from kellymom https://kellymom.com/bf/got-milk/supply-worries/fast-letdown/

  • I have the same problem. I block feed (nurse on the same boob without switching sides for multiple feeds; I do anywhere from 3-5 hr blocks depending on how often she eats). I've been pumping the boob she's not eating on once in the am for 15-20 min then feeding on the side I pumped for the next block of feeds. It's working well, we no longer have green poo. You need LO to get the hind milk.

  • Ditto to what PPs said - sounds like your LO isn't getting enough hindmilk. I noticed similar issues with DS and my supply this week, and block feeding seems to be helping a ton. I nurse from just one boob for 2 feedings in a row and pump the other side during the second feed. If he's still hungry, I'll offer the boob I just pumped or some of the milk just pumped.

  • I had this exact problem. My advice, definitely read the kellymom web link pp posted. What worked for me was block feeding. I nursed her on one side only for two feedings, then nursed the other for two feedings. I also would recline to the point I was laying down and she was uphill. Burp very often. You can also latch your LO until you get a letdown, then catch the fast flow into a cup. Once your letdown is over, put him back on. All this was what helped me. But basically if you pump too much, you're sending signals to your body to make more and your over supply will get worse. Only pump to relieve engorgement. An ounce or two. But it took me about a week to straighten mine out. I almost quit everyday, and on my worse day was when I did a lot of research and started to really look into block feeding to curb it. Full drainage block feeding is the term. Good luck.
