Fucking insurance- update in OP

edited September 2014 in Stay at Home Moms
They denied the medication my rheumatologist prescribed. If I had $4,000/month to spend on it I would just do it and leave insurance out. I'm so desperate for some relief I could cry. That's okay Cigna, I don't need to be able to use my hands. Or walk.

So Cigna isn't budging on making me do "step therapy." So today my Dr. Wrote me a scrip for methotrexate and Humira and also put me back on prednisone (plus I got a shot today to get a jump start). I have to do a DMARD (the metho), Humira and enbrel before they will approve orencia. I've already tried enbrel so that's good. Downside is I had my first home injection of Humira toad and it hurts like a bitch. Way worse than enbrel. So. It's a start. I totally stopped at Starbucks on my way home to console myself after bursting into tears in her office :/

  • Because they're assholes. I haven't tried and failed at enough of the cheaper (older and less effective with more side effects) meds.

  • How long do you have to take the other drug? Can you get your doctor to write a letter/call saying it's not doing anything? I've heard of that helping. I'm so sorry.

I have an appt with her next week to discuss the game plan

  • Keep fighting it. Get a letter of medical necessity, and call the health plan non-stop. This is the field I work in. Don't give up. The squeaky wheel gets the oil. Remember that. Hang in there, I'm sorry this sucks. The health care industry can be really unfair.

  • Can you have your doctor call the insurance company and make an appeal to the medical director? I work at a rehab hospital and we have to sometimes do that if a patient is really appropriate and an insurance company denies the admission.  Sometimes, when something goes physician to physician, it makes a difference.

I also have RA (diagnosed after my son and I am currently pregnant).  I have United Healthcare and I am dreading the pre-authorization of medication process.

    Good luck!

@QueSyrah  I have severe RA and am currently on several meds including expensive injections. My insurance would not cover the specialty injections, so my doctor gave me info to contact the manufacturer. After doing this I only have to pay $5/month! I was diagnosed with RA at 13, so I have been through this a lot. Don't worry, there is help out there. If I can help, please let me know.

They do have financial assistance but you have to use it in conjunction with your insurance. When I was on home injections I only paid $10/month.

  • Fight it!  It's a hassle but so worth it!  I just got a bill from children's mercy urgent care from DD's visit last Jan.  I'm just getting a bill from it?  I don't even understand why we owe anymore because it was a copay situation with zero testing.  sometimes I just wish we had universal health coverage.

My sympathies!!!  We've got United too...  It's not so much the preauthorization as it is they don't tell you how much you'll have to pay until after the fact...
