Baby Names

Lydia and Eliza

We have a 3 year old DD named Lydia and have a second daughter due in January. I really like Eliza and my H is open to it, but I'm worried that it might be too matchy with Lydia. We wouldn't plan to call her by a nickname, but I can easily see it getting shorted at times to Lydia and Liza, although that wouldn't be the plan.
I'm not into matchy names, but really love Eliza. Thoughts? Other names we like (but none seem right) are Hattie, Rosalie, Maren, and Georgia. Thanks! I haven't posted much since last pregnancy but am on this board often.

  • I don't think it's too matchy. I really like Eliza, and Georgia and Hattie too!

  • My H likes Maren...I don't really. So it isn't really in the running, although he keeps bringing it back up. We are originally from Georgia and all of our family lives there. And now we live in North FL near GA. So I'm worried Georgia would be a bit weird, although that's not why we like the name.

I really don't like the nicknames Lizzie or Liz, so I guess that's kinda my issue with Eliza. I like it as a full name, but that's pretty much it. Lydia often gets called Lyddi. So Lyddi and Lizzie would be out for sure.

  • I don't think they're too close. Lydia and Eliza sound sweet together.

  • I do not think they are too close. Eliza is sweet. But with that sib-set, geeks like me might wonder if you are particularly fond of Pride and Prejudice... Not there is anything wrong with that. ;-)

  • I'm Elizabeth and my name is always, always shortened to Liz (grr) or Lizzy.  People will do it, so if your fear is that the girls will become Liddy and Lizzy, that's a likely scenario.

I do like Pride and Prejudice, but it's just coincidence that we happen to be considering both names.

I think it is the perfect amount of matchiness for a sibling set. Also, I loooove both names. I would never have thought to shorten Eliza to Lizzie in a million years. Eliza is just too pretty. Go for it!

  • I love Eliza!  I don't think it's too matchy with Lydia.  I think their similar but not enough to confuse them or that it looks like you're going for a theme or anything.  I also like Georgia on your list.
  • I like Eliza and I don't think they are too close if you are not planning on using a nn.  I really love Hattie though fwiw! I have tried to add that to our list and DH doesn't like it with our DD's name.

  • Another possible nn for Eliza could be Ellie, which takes it in an entirely different direction. My goddaughter is Rosalie, nns Rosie or Rose, which I love. My SIL is Maren, so I'm very used to that name too. But definitely not a name for everyone.
  • I have a Lydia and we call her Liddy sometimes, too. I LOVE Lydia and Eliza. Too sweet! Oddly enough, my oldest daughter has an E name as well, as does another Lydia and E sibset I know. Something about Lydia + an E name must just fit. :)

I vote for Eliza, back up being Hattie.
  • I love Eliza!! DH said no but I still love it

  • Thanks for the opinions! Eliza is definitely my favorite at this moment. I think it's pretty but also spunky. My H likes it but isn't in love with it, so we'll see. Glad to know that most don't think it's too matchy. I really would discourage any Liz, Lizzy etc nicknames. Naming a second is so hard. Lydia was literally the only name we liked when we were pregnant with her! I'm too perfectionistic and analytical. But I think Eliza is a name I could like as much as Lydia, which is encouraging.

  • I don't think it matches at all.
  • I love Eliza! Cute when she's young, and she'll grow into it. I also love Rosalie (and love Rosalia even more).
  • I like it. It doesn't sound matchy to me.
