Help mn honoring my Dad

I just found out I am pregnant with baby #2 so we have plenty of time, but I would like your opinions.

My Dad passed away in July and I really want to honor him with the mn, however, he has a very tough name. His name was Herbert Virgil Lastname (short Scottish/Irish Mc name) III, nm Mick.

We decided if #2 is a girl her mn will be Virginia. If #2 is a boy though we aren't sure how to incorporate his name. My DH doesn't love the flow of any of the first names we like with Herbert, Virgil and Mick.  Is it weird to put my maiden name in the mn spot?  I do love my maiden name and it seems to flow much better than the other names.

Some of the boy names we like so far are:

Joshua

Lucas (our pick for #1 if we had a boy, not sure I love the popularity now)

Ryan (we have a short R last name so I am unsure if Ryan R*** works)

Emerson

Thoughts?

  • If DH doesn't like any thing else, I think your maiden name would be a great option - it honors your father but also the family you came from.  We have two middle names picked out if this baby is a boy and I'm thinking about suggesting adding my maiden name to the first and middle name we've chosen for a girl.

  • I love the thought of your maiden name in the MN spot!

  • I think using your maiden name would be nice. FWIW I feel like Virgil would sound good as a middle name to your choices. I like Lucas Virgil best.

  • Ok since we have plenty of time I am going to still try and work with Herbert or Virgil but at least I know it will OK to use my maiden name as well.

Thank you for all your kind words :) I do miss him and I excited for LO to honor him.

I think that your last name for a middle name is fine. You could also pick a name that has something to do with something that your dad loved as well. The middle name spot is a little different when it comes to using more unique names. Like if your dad loved hunting or fishing, you could use Hunter or Fisher. If he was into archery....Archer. Into flying......Jet.

I know someone that ran the Boston Marathon when she was pregnant with her twins. They have the middle names "Race" and "Runner", and to others it may look odd, but since she was an avid runner and did the marathon while she was pregnant with them....it is special to her and a good story to tell them.

  • I agree -- using your maiden name as the MN could be nice. And I LOVE Joshua.
