Initals Question

We are team green and still deciding on a middle name for a potential girl. We have a family name that we love and it works for both sides and sounds lovely with our name.  Trouble is the initials spell GAS.  Would that bother you? Am I over-thinking it?

Re: Initals Question

  • I think it's cute, especially if she grows up to be a car girl.

  • Hmmm, I feel like that would have bugged me as a kid. I'm not sure that other kids would know her middle name though.

  • I've heard that there are psychology studies that show that correlations between initials that spell things affecting individuals in positive or negative ways.

For example: ACE, GOD, JOY, WOW vs RAT, BAD, DUD, PIG

    In short, it matters!

  • "People with monograms such as JOY or WOW had a better chance of living longer--and were less likely to commit suicide or die in an accident--than those with neutral or meaningless initials such as JAY or WLW, or those named, say, BUM or UGH, said psychologist Nicholas Christenfeld."
  • I probably wouldn't do it. But I don't think it's a huge deal if you do

  • I don't think it is a big deal, but I may decide against it.  When I think about initials, I think about the LL Bean bags we all had in school and how it would look. Silly, I know!

  • That would bother me, honestly. I was considering a name that would have been AKA and decided against it for that reason.
  • I don't think it's a big deal. Especially if you love love love the names.

  • How would you feel about it if it were your initials? My first and last initals are V.D. my husband didn't think it was a big deal and no one would notice. Wrong. It hasn't been brought up many times but when it is....I don't like it.

    She'll never want anything monogrammed...

Girls like to doodle on things...put their initials and their best friends initials together. Kids can be mean! I think if there is a questions about it maybe you should consider something else.
  • I wouldn't probably. Gas as in what your car runs on is fine. Gas as in what you pass when you have stomach distress would be a disgusting name.

  • I would not do it. No way.

  • I don't think I would do it either.

An aside: when we were naming DD, I really loved Olivia as a middle name but then her initials would have been COK.  Nope, nope, nope, nope.  Middle school boys would have way too much fun with that.

We also had this issue. Although, DH wouldn't budge on Olivia as middle name so I refused to use C first names because I was worried. DH doesn't/didn't think it was a huge deal but I definitely remember kids making fun of other initials when I was in elementary/middle school. I wouldn't do GAS.

  • Thanks guys! I think we will definitely be avoiding GAS, just wanted to double check that my hesitation wasn't just me being crazy... On to the next name...

  • I'm not a monogram fan but I still wouldn't personally want to have the initials GAS. It may not be a deal breaker for you though, just depending on how much personal meaning is in the name and rather you like other options as much. As others said, it could be worse...

The monogram would be gSa though so that isn't really an issue. I don't think most people get monograms with the middle name larger or just straight up G.A.S. You're more likely to get things with her first name scrolled across.

  • One thing that puzzles me is how would school children know her middle name for teasing? I think the teasing is more likely to be close friends just playing around, not trying to be hurtful. I don't think anyone in middle school knew or cared about my middle name, much less the boys??

  • I am not into monograms, and have never used mine (SAK), but I do initial things and then I'm just SK.  My daughter is EEK and my son is GAK, and though we did worry a little over EEK we decided no one would ever care and the names are more important.  If your daughter ever needs to use initials she can just be GS.

There's a lot of pearl clutchers over initials in here.

I have three that are off limits: ASS, FUK and KKK.
