Differences in communication?

So I'm sure that by now, you're all sick of me posting about Emmett's speech (or lack thereof). But I have another speech related question. I've only heard Emmett say a few words. He used to say "Dye, Dye" when we left, but has since quit. I've also heard him say "Kitty" quite a few times. And he says "Dlane" whenever he sees an airplane.

However, whenever I pick him up from daycare, she tells me that he says all kinds of words. Apparently he says "uh-oh" and "thank you" all day every day. He also says "hat", "down" and a few other that I can't remember right now.

Anyone else have experience with that? The only thing I can think of is that he hears the other kids saying these things, so he wants to be like them. It's so frustrating though, since he mostly points and shrieks at home.

Re: Differences in communication?

  • My mom tells me all the time that ds2 says words but I think she hears what she wants.

  • My LO would very clearly say "thank you" but to me it was mimicking and she probably doesn't understand the content meaning of it. However, for the last week, ALL she has said is "No". She had about 15 words she could say...........but they've all gone out the window now that she's on her "no" obsession. Her favorite is to shake her pointer finger and say "no, no, no".  Speech takes awhile to develop and they will move 2 steps forward 1 step back sometimes.  Just keep talking to him.

  • Thanks ladies! I'm trying not to be too worried, I just wonder why he's starting to talk there, but not at home. I thought that was odd. And @sct728, I'm not sure what to think about him saying thank you. I think he's probably just imitating the other kids, but she says that he says it clear as a bell every time she gives him any food. The other day she gave him a cracker when I picked him up, convinced that he would say it in front of me, and then he didn't. Hmph!
