Weekend feeding after going back to work?

Hello all, I admit I'm not a Regular poster and also that I did not search through the breast-feeding thread (I only bump on mobile and it's overwhelming long to search through)... But I figured there might be some others out there facing a similar situation, and this could be a spinoff so here goes...

For others out there who have returned back to work and are continuing some BF'ing, how are you handling weekends?

I started back at work on Tuesday, and I am managing to get one pumping session in before I leave home and two pumping sessions while at work. Whatever I pump is used the following day to feed the little one (supplemented with some formula cause I can't pump enough to make up all that he needs).

my mom is watching the little one full-time and just bottle feeds on demand. After a week of pumping only at 5:30, 9:30 and 1:30 i'm wondering if my boobs could even keep up with him during the day on. It sure seems easier to stick with pumping schedule. But I have to admit that if I'm around the little one I know I am going to prefer nursing him, just for the bonding time.

Just wondering if others have experiences, successes/failures that they like to share

  • The more you nurse/pump the more you make. It's supply and demand. If you don't nurse/pump you are perpetuating the situation of not making enough.

  • Yes , I understand that concept.

However maybe I didn't phrase the topic correctly: I was simply wondering if those that are pumping while at work are going to be pumping on the weekends (following the same schedules that they would during the weekdays) or will they return to nursing the baby is directly?

  • Ah! Hadn't thought about Monday :P
    That is a good thought!

My bigger problem is that I don't physically have time during the day to pump all that he eats... Which seems to be about 20 ounces, and I get about 12 ounces out of my two sessions. Adding a third would add too much time to my work day, and I'd rather spend time at home with him.

Perhaps I'll plan to nurse around my pumping times, then try to nurse other times on demand but give a bottle if the supply isn't there.

  • I plan to pump at work and nurse at night and on the weekends. I know pumping is a pain. If you feel like supply doesn't meet demand, try pumping after the first morning feeding before work. I've been doing that to build a stash and can typically get 4-6 extra ounces.
  • I've actually been pumping at home instead of the morning feeding (and by morning I mean ~5:30 am), I'll leave the milk in a bottle for my mom to give him whenever he wakes up, and I'm able to get out the door by 6, and to work by 7 (otherwise traffic is a bear).

I'll give nursing on demand tomorrow a try and see how it goes :)

This.  I pump around 11AM each day while I'm home.  That is during her long late morning nap.  I also nurse on demand all weekend and every weeknight.  DD has reverse cycled somewhat.  She only eats about 4-6oz, while at daycare, but she's attached to my boob until she goes to sleep every night.
