So when the baby is brand new...what do they wear? In those first few weeks...are they just in sleep suits? And also how often, on average, do you have to change their clothing/babygrows? Sorry for the stupid question

Sorry for the stupid question
We use sleepers until they crawl or it gets too hot. We probably change clothing 3-4x a day.
They wear newborn sized baby clothes. Personally, I prefer zip up sleepers for the most part as I find those keep the baby nice and warm and make it easy for diaper changes and such. Expect to do lots of clothing changes. All kinds of things happen to newborn baby clothes (spit up, diaper mishaps, diaper blowouts, etc...) I usually go through at least 2 or 3 outfits in any given day for a newborn baby but all of my babies have been spitters.

We have six children: Emmelyn (DOB 3/8/2003), William (DOB 6/27/2007), Izabella (DOB 9/14/2010) , Elizabeth (DOB 8/19/2011), Patrick (DOB 12/5/2012), Amelia (DOB 12/6/2013), Expecting baby #7 around 12/30/2014!
I have too many small children, so I baby wear the newbies in order to keep their eyes in their heads. They wear sleepers, and usually I only have to change them once a day because I keep a reciving blanket under their chins to catch the barf.
So, they wear one outfit and a bajillion blankies.
We did a lot of sleep and plays and Carter's 3-pc outfits (onesie, pants & cardigan). I only changed clothes if she had a blowout/spit up, never 3-4 times/day. She got a new sleeper at night.
It depends on how big baby is and how fast they grow. My DD was 7lb & 20.5" at birth, dropped to about 6.5lb when we left the hospital.
NB size from birth-2mo 3mo size from 2-5mo 6mo size from 5-9mo
Just sleepers and maybe one outfit for special occasions. Generally 1-2 sleepers a day, depending on spit ups and blow outs. Someone said NB sized but I would caution against too many NB and get more 0-3. DD was born at 8 lbs which is the upper limit for NB clothes, which are generally 5-8lbs. Also you said something about baby growing. Are you asking when you'll have to buy the next size? After they're in 0-3, probably every 2-3 months for the first year.

Not really a dumb question Like PP's said, I plan to use sleepers at first. I got some NB and 0-3 so she can wear either depending on how big (or small!) she is. I also do onesies with pants, but I prefer to wait until the umbilical cord stump has fallen off because I worry the pants will rub it. Really, as long as they're cozy and comfy, it doesn't matter.
Like @twolittledogs said, I don't remember changing him a ton just as needed during the day and then at bedtime.
I didn't buy any NB sized clothes thinking my first would outgrow everything right away. Wrong. He was 6.5 lbs and scrawny. He didn't fit into 1-3 M size until he was 2 months old. My son was born in the summer so all he wore we're onesies and a blanket, but later he was in footed pjs all day. Zippers are quieter than snaps for sleeping diaper changes.
My advice is to get a variety of sizes of sleep and plays, and onesies! My daughter was small and even at 18 months was still wearing 12 month size clothes. Every baby is wonderfully different . Good luck!
I like kimono style tops for while there's still a cord stump. My mw recommends against onesies until it falls off. So basically a long sleeve kimono top, swaddle, and hat and then whatever after.
I never used the kimono tops w DS but I might have to try them for this reason!
I used a lot of sleepers with DD, but surprisingly did not have to change her clothes as often as everyone told me I would in the beginning. Either we were really lucky with diaper blow-outs/leaks or my friends with babies before me just exaggerated. A little later on, we had to change more often for her epic spit-ups, but I was prepared for those.

What's the difference between a sleeper and a onesie? Is a sleeper the one with long sleeves and covers the legs and feet? I found something called a sleep and play, but when I search for sleeper nothing comes up.
Yes, sleepers/sleep n plays are the same thing. Some have the feet in them, some don't, but long sleeve and covers the legs at the very least. Onesies are the little shirts (long or short sleeve) that just snap at the crotch.
