Isis came up in the UOs today.
I'll admit I don't know a ton about what's going on. So if you have a handle on it, tell us what you know. And if you have questions/opinions/other thoughts, those can go here too!

Re: Let's talk about ISIS
They are a strong terrorist group. Very rich and well funded. Their agenda is known and they are responsible for two journalist deaths. They are one if the most harsh militant groups known so far. The US president has taken a stand against them. US will be sending in troops to advise the Syrian opposition but also charge air strikes. However, they claim it won't be another war like Iraq. The congress seems to not be on board yet. Republicans think there is a lot more to know and learn before we go in. I think there is truth at both ends of the extreme. It's not an easy solution and certainly not a cheap one!
NPR had a good piece this morning about IS, ISIS and/or ISIS. They are a heavily funded, armed and infulential terrorism group that claims to represent all Muslims however only a small subset of the Muslims are part of IS. They are self proclaimed freedom fighters that are spreading their propaganda world wide. They are a very violent group and most recently released video showing a beheading of another western journalist.

Just to be clear. ISIS represents a "small subset" of Muslims the way the Westboro Baptist Church represents a "small subset" of Christians. They are a small fringe group. Just the way you said it made it sound like maybe "oh, only 10-20% of Muslims are part of ISIS," when it's more like .00001%.
I did not want to attempt to make any statistical references because I have no clue what the actual numbers would be but simply that it is a very small segment of the World's Muslim population.
You're right -- my numbers are pretty off, but it's the thought that it's a very very small subset. The KKK analogy is much better!!
