PUPP

I'll be 34 weeks on Friday and just started to get PUPP. These little itchy bumps are the devil!
Does anyone else have it? What did y'all do about it?

Re: PUPP

  • I had it with my first and it was not fun.  I think mine started a little later (like 36ish weeks) and I just did my best to ignore it.  My MW said that using a topical hydrocortizone cream was fine so I put that on a few times per day to try to take the edge off.  So far I haven't noticed it with my second (also a boy- and it is supposed to be more common with boy babies).  Mine went away right after I gave birth so hopefully, yours will be the same way!

  • I experienced  a terrible bout of it early into my third trimester - my dr. recommended topical hydrocortizone cream and over the counter zyrtec (or generic equivalent). I looked into other natural remedies and got a lot of recommends for pine tar soap. For a week, I washed with the pine tar soap and took the zyrtec a few times, not every day. I did do the topical for the first day or two, as I was really bad, but stopped after that.

Seemed mine cleared up quite a bit after the first week and then after a few weeks pretty much dissipated - I used the pine tar soap to wash with (and just did a nice smelling bath gel after to alleviate it's strong sent) for a month and now the rash has pretty much gone away and I just deal with getting itchy every few days - so I do the Zyrtech once every other or every two days and that seems to be all I need.

My case was apparently super mild to the point where my Ob/Gyn questioned if it wasn't some other kind of allergic reaction besides PUPPs but the fact that I get itchy every few days confirms it probably was. I honestly think its the pine tar soap. I still use it once a week.

  • Dude! So glad you posted this cuz I wanted to. I got it at 34 weeks and about 5 days in it exploded to cover my inner thighs, bikini line, full belly, boobs, forearms and it is now creeping up my neck. Ouch. I feel your itch!

I frantically read up on natural remedies as well as more studied anti-itch stuff. Here's what I did/am doing.

Hydrocortisone cream: Takes itch away for 2 seconds, not enough.

Calamine lotion: Takes itch away for a few minutes, not long enough.

Technu rash relief spray: Love this stuff. Favorite topical remedy for sure, stick it in the fridge for added coolness/relief.

Pine tar soap: GO GET SOME RIGHT NOW! This stuff stinks but if you lather up 1-3x/day and rinse in a cool shower you should get relief for up to a couple hours, if you don't scratch! I am showering 3x/day with this stuff and love it.

Dandelion root tea or capsules: This is something I read lots of women tried. In the blogs I read most women who took it said the rash almost completely cleared up in 1-2 weeks. I'm only on day 3 so I can't attest to it but I'm so damn itchy I'm willing to try almost anything. Midwife approved.

Nettle leaf tea: Same women who wrote about dandelion root also drank this tea. I'm doing it.

Wet wash cloths: Put multiple wash clothes in the fridge and just drape them over wherever your rash is. Change them out as they warm up from your body heat. This provides the longest relief as it is constant. Sitting with one under my shirt now instead of itching my skin off.

Spray bottle with water: Keep it in the fridge and when you feel super itchy just wet down your clothes a little or spray onto your skin. Nothing like a shock of cold water to take away itch, if only temporarily.

Sorry so long but wanted to share what I'm doing! This rash sucks!! I feel for ya and am right there with you.
  • I've got an itchy rash on bottom part of breasts/lower cleavage and upper stomach/under bra. How can you tell the difference between PUPPS and the more serious itching condition?

The more serious skin condition should be ruled out first by a blood test. Def talk to your doc or midwife next appt to get that taken care of! Hopefully it's just PUPP, but if it is: I'M SO SORRY. Shit sucks.
