Vehicle Question - six car seats

Good Afternoon Ladies,
I just found out that I am 8weeks pregnant with twins!  Exciting and scared to death!  These will be baby 5 and 6 for us!  So six car seats!  We currently have a mini van that will accomodate everyone, I think.  We have a highlander that we are considering trading in for another minivan.  My question is: What do you drive?

Re: Vehicle Question - six car seats

  • I only have my twins but I just bought a Honda Odyssey.  We would like another baby and I babysit so it is nice to have the extra space.  I am a CPST (aka car seat tech).  Something to think about is how many tether anchors your vehicle has.  All forward facing car seats need to be tethered and many 3rd row vehicles including minivans only have 1 or 2 tethers in the 3rd row.  The Odyssey is the only one that has a tether in every seating postition.

  • I have a Honda Accord. The twins will be child 2 and 3 for us. Not looking forward to getting rid of it.
  • Yes, if you want to stick to minivans and avoid going up to a full sized van, the Honda Odyssey is going to be the one you want to go with. Only minivan I know of that would be able to fit six car seats with tethers.... BUT you also need to take into consideration that you will have to be clever about getting the kids in the very back buckled, too.... when you have the full three-seat bench in the middle row, it doesn't give you much room to reach behind to the third row seats - you would either want your oldest kids to be capable of buckling and unbuckling safely, or be able to open the back hatch to check their buckles each time. You will also need very narrow car seats in order to fit all of them side by side on the benches.

  • Thanks, ladies....so which narrow car seats do you recommend?
  • @PSUBean22‌ I believe the diono radian is the one people mainly talk about as being narrow enough to fit 3 across but there might be other options too.

  • Yes, the Radian is slim and has one of the longest lifetimes (can potentially stay with your kids for a full 10 years), but it is expensive, and it contains so much metal that it is probably the heaviest seat I've ever personally encountered. I would NOT want to drop one on my foot (or have to move it in and out of the car very often).

  • I know a family that had twins for numbers 5 and 6 and had at least 4 in cat seats (include the babies) and they have an Armada.

  • How old are you other children?  Height? Weight? FF or RF? That will help me recommend seats.

I have three in the booster seats (two with the backs and one without) and one in a Britax Marathon, forward facing.
