Breastfeeding

hard to latch when full?

If your breasts get a little too full does that make it hard to latch? I am just curious because today I went 3 hr.s and about 20 min before I fed DD(she's a newborn). She had a terrible time latching so I was trying to figure out if perhaps I was a little too full. I didnt feel terribly full but maybe I was and didnt realize it.

Re: hard to latch when full?

  • yes, it can definitely make it harder to latch. newborns should be eating at least every 2 hours during the day and at least every 4-5 hours at night, so if that 3 1/2 hours was during that day, that's a pretty long time for your breasts to go without a feeding.

if you get engorged, you can either briefly hand express or pump on low suction for a little while just so your breasts aren't rock-hard.

I think I need to be a little better about feeding more often during the day. It's easy to let 3 hrs. go by but thanks for the reminder. When you say 4-5 hrs at night, do you mean for newborns too? My DD can sometimes do a 4 hr. stretch

  • I've always had a really tough time hand expressing. Even when engored. (LO is 7 months now and I think i only figured it out a few weeks ago). Anyway, when i had that, because i could hand express well, i used to just massage the breast and then try to compress it so LO could latch. Usually once LO got it started, I'd spray for a bit and i'd do that into a burp cloth and then let LO latch again. Good luck!
