TTC After a Loss

Retaining tissue after d&c?

I had a D&C 3.5 weeks ago. Thought I got my period last Thursday but it was not a normal period for me. I called my RE yesterday to ask about it and she had me come in. During the US she said there is still a little placenta in there. I've been bleeding nonstop now for a week. How is that possible? I'm scheduled for surgery next week anyway to have cysts removed and she said she would do a histocopy at the same time to remove any leftover tissue. Anyone experienced this before? It's driving me crazy.

Re: Retaining tissue after d&c?

  • Big ((HUGS)).  I also had retained tissue after my d&c and an abnormal "period" 5 weeks later.  It was scary and frustrating... thankfully it passed with the following period, so I was able to avoid surgery.  Since you're having a surgery anyhow, it's probably a good idea to go ahead and remove it at that time.  I don't believe it's incredibly common, but not all that uncommon either.  My RE didn't seem alarmed or concerned, other than with letting it go more than a month or two before removing it.  (I really wanted to give my body a chance to pass it naturally.)  Best wishes for a successful surgery and a speedy recovery!

  • Oh thank you! Makes me feel better to know I'm not the only one. My RE didn't seem too concerned either. Hoping the surgery will get everything in working order soon!
  • You have to have this taken care of. I had no idea that I had retained tissue and it landed me in the ER with a hemmorhage. Glad to hear your doctor is being proactive and taking care of it for you.
  • I had retained tissue 15 weeks after my D&C and my HCG level was stuck at 55. I had a Hysteroscopy D&C to remove the tissue. The tissue was tested and returned positive for a partial molar pregnancy. I would recommend you ask your Doctor about testing the retained tissue for abnormalities.

  • This recently happened to me. My RE saw retained tissue via hysteroscope/ultrasound 10 weeks after my D&C. I had already had one period in that time and know I ovulated with the retained tissue in there, based on temps. My beta was below 5 when the retained tissue was discovered. I had it surgically removed via operative hysteroscopy about a month ago. It sucked, but I agree with @PinkCamino that this is something that has to be taken care of. I hope all goes smoothly.

  • I had retained tissue multiple times from using cytotec. While the D&C finally resolved the issue for me, it is possible for tissue to be missed during the initial one. Also, bleeding can occur at varying degrees. Some women only have it for a week while others like myself have it for 6 weeks. Definitely listen to your doctor as he/she knows what is best for your particular circumstances, but certainly get this taken care of because, like PC said, it can be serious if left untreated. Hopefully, with the retained tissue taken care of your bleeding will end soon so you can progress forward ((hugs)).

Life is a balance of holding on and letting go.

  • I had retained tissue as well. I tried Cytotec and that didn't work so I had a second D&C & hysteroscopy. I bled for 8 weeks straight (from date of my first D&C to 3 weeks after my second D&C). The good thing about having the hysteroscopy done is that your doctor won't be performing the procedure blind this time. Hope everything goes smoothly!

  • Thanks, all. It's all so frustrating. The doctor keeps saying, "wow that really wanted to stay in there huh?" Wellll I wish my baby really wanted to stay in there too. But anyway I'm glad we have a plan of action and will get everything taken care of next week. Thanks so much for the hugs and support.
  • @MyFirstRaspberry‌ did you have any other molar symptoms?
  • @MyFirstRaspberry‌ did you have any other molar symptoms?

I didn't actually have any noticeable symptoms. But since the tissue was stuck in there for so long and a lot showed on the u/s, the doctor wanted to test the tissue. I'm glad they did and I've been monitored for 4 cycles to make sure my HCG levels remain negative. I've just recently been cleared to TTC.

  • I updated on the newbie thread but I know not everyone looks there...
After 12 weeks of my hcg still hanging around (and calling my dr several times asking for an ultrasound), this time it only went down 2 points (48). My Dr finally started taking this seriously and sent me for an ultrasound yesterday. Turns out I never passed the sac!!!! Now I'm scheduled for a D&C on Tuesday. Feeling so frustrated because this could have been discovered months ago. So if you feel somethings not right and your hcg is crawling down, definitely advocate for yourself. For me it was really hard to do so because I was feeling really down. But, I have learned my lesson for sure.

@petitchou1019 I'm so sorry you're dealing with this, but I'm glad your doctor is taking it seriously. I hope you'll be on the road to full recovery soon.
