Do you lease or buy vehicles?

And why?  We've always bought but are looking to possibly lease our next one.  I know the pros/cons but just wondering what you chose and if you are happy with your decision.

Re: Do you lease or buy vehicles?

  • 1 of each.  DH buys because he drives hella miles to and from work. I leased because I wanted a little more car for a better price.  I know everyone will say it's so bad to lease. I agree for the most part, but it what can you do...

Buy, because it's nice to have something of value left when we are done making the payments.  The cars we were able to buy were nice enough (not as nice as the ones we could have leased but...)
  • I don't think we will ever lease a vehicle, it just doesn't seem worth it financially. Especially with working in the insurance industry- I see people all the time that have to file claims at the end of their lease to help pay for the damages that are accrued so they don't have to pay out of pocket to have them fixed when they turn them in.

  • buy - we both drive and travel too much to lease.  WAY to much.  dh has almost 70,000 miles on his car and it's 3 years old.

  • MY dad bought me one for graduation 5 years ago we still have and always leased a new one until this year.  The lease prices were outrageous for an Explorer or Trailblazer, so we bought one for about what we were paying a month to lease, with a 6 year warranty
  • Buy, I agree with EMT, we have something of value after paying money for it. Leasing to me is throwing money away. Sure we could afford a lot more if we leased, but we are debt free and want to stay that way to me a lease is just adding debt (monthly payments).
  • We buy.  However, I should have leased my 2002 and 2005 trucks.  The 2008 isn't worth it to lease -- the lease payment was only about $75 less/month than it was to buy it.  So financially, it made sense to buy it.  However due to my track record of trading in every 3 years, leasing (in the past) would have been more financially smart.

My father always instilled in me that you want to BUY (never rent) your housing and vehicles.  So it's hard for me to look past that (even when it makes more sense financially).

  • Buy, we drive wayy too many miles to lease. I have 60,000 miles on my 2 1/2 yr old car.

  • We always buy because we drive our cars til they drop - we are considering selling our 5 year old car right now, but that will be the first car I've ever gotten rid of that was younger then 10 years old.

    ?

I have a friend that used to buy a new car every 3 years - he switched to leasing, which makes a lot of since for him - he's paying less for a newer car and he can trade out every 2 years if he wants now.

    ?

I would love to have a newer car every few years, but I'm not comfortable with the notion of renting anything - I bought a condo at 22 rather then have to rent something, because it was hammered into me that "renting is giving away money" obviously thats not actually true in a car that loses equity, but its a hard belief to shake.?

  • We bought both our cars. I personally don't like the whole leasing thing. I have alot of friends that are leasing though. I think it's because the payments are less and also it makes sense for people who want to drive luxury cars and want to switch often.  I have a friend who is really materialistic and only drives mercedes..the top of the line ones and her and her husband lease and trade almost every year.

  • We always buy for the same reasons that EMT said.
  • We, along with everyone else in our family, always buy.
