Pregnant after a Loss

massage in first tri?

So I'm 6 weeks today. Yeah! My sleep is disturbed (hormones) and I know my neck and shoulders have been taking all my anxiety. My massage therapist was trained to wait til 2nd tri. OBGYN says its fine. With PGLB I don't want any regrets, but I know I could sleep better. Im conflicted. Any thoughts?

Re: massage in first tri?

  • The day spa that I go to doesn't do them until either 16 or 18 weeks, can't remember which.

  • I get regular prenatal massages now (I'm 31 weeks) but most places and professionals won't see you until 2nd trimester. I'm not sure if it's actually unsafe, or if it's just because 1st trimester can be a tricky time (I've had 2 previous losses, both in 1st trimester). I would avoid massages until you're at least 13 or 14 weeks. Or maybe just get a chair massage for your neck and shoulders vs. anything lying down like a typical massage?

  • I have waited until 2nd tri both pregnancies. Most salons require this just for extra precaution as well even though your doc may be ok with it. Have you tried a chiropractor? I got numerous adjustments last pregnancy and they soooooo helped!!

  • Ditto the other ladies re: second Tri for timing of a massage. During first Tri I did have a facial and that was really relaxing. Maybe you could consider that or some other spa service for a nice relax?

  • I didn't get a massage until second tri but that was mostly due to my own comfort level. My last pg I had one in first tri and suffered an mmc 5 days later. Do I think the two were related? My rational brain says no, but PGAL brain wants me to think otherwise…

  • There is mixed research most say that some massage therapists not trained in early PG massage could rub back to hard or abdomen area and therefor increase risk for miscarriage. I really want a massage but I will wait for 14 weeks per my doctor. It would take away any relaxation I would get with the worry and I have miscarried enough times to do all I can to not add to my risk. Also I don't want to risk having a massage therapist trained enough or not. Maybe there is no risk like some say...but I don't want to be the "test subject".

    Come week 14 though...yippee!!!!!
