What brand are you using? Maybe try switching. We were perfect with pampers but then had a box of huggies that we got as gift, every time she has pooped with them on, we get a blow out up her back.
We are using pampers, but was also given buggies and the costco brand. Those don't seem to fit either. He's over 10lbs so the NB should be too small, but the size 1 are loose in his legs.
I have DD in size 1 pampers and she is around 10 pounds. Be sure to fan out the bands around each leg as PP said, also make sure the back top is out and not folded in. Those adjustments have helped us contain the poopsplosions!
My DS is also in size 1 pampers and probably about 10 lbs. He has skinny legs and the diapers have contained his pee/poop just fine. Have you had leaks yet or you just think they appear too big? I just fold down the top part of the diaper as needed to get it snug, but the elastic bands around the legs seem to contain things just fine.

Today is the first time I've left him in a size 1 - every other time I would take it back off because it looked too big. So far no leaks, hopefully it fits fine and I was just being paranoid about it looking too big. Thanks ladies!
This will happen with every size change, they look Huge!! Ditto what others said about being sure the leg gussets are flared out (we call it "activate the ruffle"!) Here's to no blowouts for you!
My husband thought I was nuts blaming blowouts on Huggies! He blames my diapering skills ha. (He believes he's the diaper master.) Glad to see others agree.

C has been fine in the couple of huggies samples we had and the pampers we got have been great...but she has had leak issues with the pack of luvs we were gifted. I will use them until they are gone (we have a day or two left) but I use the pampers for nighttime since she doesn't always wake up when she needs changed at night.

With DS we bitched a lot about the leaking. This time we will put DD in bigger diapers sooner. Just remember to run your fingers down the inside frills to pop them out.
We just moved up to Honest size 1 after Pampers Swaddlers size 0 and Honest size 0 were leaking with regularity. They look big, but for the most part the pee/poo stay contained!
We had a few bad experiences with Earth's Best (aka Earth's Worst) but Huggies and Pampers are fine for us. But the "ruffle activation" is definitely key!
Yes on the fanning out the ruffles and making sure the back isn't tucked in. And I would just like to add my contempt for Huggies. We have so few leaks in Pampers, but the packs of Huggies that I was given are going to be donated... nightmare!

We have had two leaks, both in Huggies. But I'm going to use them up because I don't want to save half a pack of nb diapers.
