Hypoallergenic Formula?

Sorry girls, no way I was going through our formula thread!

Lo was switched to hypoallergenic formula today per her pedi. Now it's the Similac Allimentum and dd hates it. She cried and screamed. Anyone else's lo refuse? Gotta the the taste. And this price will be the death of me!!!!

  • DS hated the alimentum too. He's on nutramigen as of 2 days ago.

He won't take it on its own though, the consistency is too thin. My pedi is having us mix it with rice cereal to thicken the consistency, and because we are already having major spit up issues.

And yeah, shit is expensive. I hope as his belly matures he outgrows it. I feel your pain.

  • We are on the nutramigen because of really bad reflux. To me, alimentum smells like burnt cheez-its and nutramigen smells like regular cheez-its.

I called my insurance company (Aetna) and they cover formula for certain reasons. My dr said she doesn't think they will accept reflux as a reason but I'm going to try and submit anyways. You might want to look into it, especially if your babe has a true allergy.

  • We're also on nutramigen due to dairy and now reflux...we're waiting to see if new reflux meds work and if not we will start switching formulas
  • Been there. We were on nutramigen for a while. Took her a while to take it and she looked at me like WTF is this. She started taking it willingly. Beware of watery poop. It's gross! Shit is expensive!

  • Thanks girls. Was wondering how others handled it. Our lo has extreme gas that affects her day and she's constantly crying at feedings. Hopefully we can get her take this. I will now try insurance just to see what they say.

  • My DS has MSPI so he is now on Elecare. He was on alimentum before this though and we had the same problem. His GI said if he doesn't like the taste to add a couple drops of pure vanilla extract to his bottles. He drank it really quickly once we did that. He still needs the vanilla because apparently according to the GI Elecare tastes worse because it's amino acid based. The Elecare has helped him tremendously. Hopefully your LO does well with alimentum because Elecare is SUPER expensive.

  • My DS1 one is on Neocate for allergies, if your regular insurance doesn't cover it, you can try to submit things through durable medical equipment (DME).

Could you use the old formula for a while to transition over and titrate it - so mix with a smaller percentage of old formula each time until you have none in there?

I've heard of some using syrups - like hersey's, which wouldn't be my first choice, but may help get something in.

i would try either elecare or neonate.  dd1 was on nutramigen for about 5 days and had the exact symptoms you are describing.  Insurance will cover both of those but if you LO has a dairy allergy- alimentum and nutramigen still have cow milk protein.  I feel for you-  DD1 was like your LO and it is heartbreaking.  Major hugs mama.

  • Thanks girls!

So lo is actually worse on the Alimentim. How is that possible? We weaned her the second day with only a quarter of the new mixed with 3/4 original formula. She cried most of the day.. Spit up every feeding and was arching her back. Now I took her off the Alimentim without talking to pedi. We have a well check this week. Ugh

  • Does she have GERD? My DS has it and he was having the same issue. Though he also has MSPI. But the Zantac helps him and we were able to distinguish it was the formula he was on once we got the GERD under control.

my DD1 was worse on Nutramigen- every time i gave it to her I actually felt like I was giving her poison. I took her off of it after 4 days because my mama instinct knew it wasn't right.  You know LO better than anyone- trust your mama instinct and major e-hugs to you.  I know how hard it is to watch your LO suffer while you try to figure out what is going on.

I'm not sure!!! I'm hoping my pedi well check this week goes well. I need to get this figured out!
