Echongenic Intracardiac Focus

We found out at our anatomy scan today that our baby has this. Pretty much it's a bright spot on the heart caused by calcium deposit in the heart muscle. Although it alone doesn't cause problems, DH is freaking out. Any other moms have experience with this?

Re: Echongenic Intracardiac Focus

  • Thank you for the peace of mind. Our doctor said a prayer for us which was sweet, but made us kind of worried. Also the whole talk about increase in chromosomal abnormality kind of freaked me out.

  • Thank you! Yeah he is doing another ultrasound in 4 weeks, but he looked at the ventricles and blood flow and said everything else looked good. We didn't do the quad screen and he offered the harmony screen which I'm not sure if it will be covered or not.

  • Yes my little girl has the same thing. My doctor isn't really worried since everything else looks great. I'm not getting any other testing done, just because the doctor really didn't seem to be concerned, and expressed how common it is now a days.

I was a little freaked out at first, but now I don't even think about it!
  • My Perinatalogist spotted one on my lil' baby and stated (almost laughingly- like reassuringly) that these are super common and usually mean nothing is wrong.

MFM told me they saw this at my a/s today.  She said they used to think it was a marker for Down Syndrome but now know that it is not.  They are still supposed to offer additional screenings when it is found, but I had the quad screen done today before my appt. anyway and everything else about the heart was normal on my u/s.  She said the only reason why she really brought it up was because she didn't want someone at the OB's office to lead me to believe that baby had an increased risk going by outdated info.

  • I did a lot of research on this once we were told our little girl had one. They seem to be increasingly common with the way ultrasound technology is. Our doctor told us not to worry but we had the blood test anyway. Not to scare/worry you but our blood test came back positive for Turners syndrome. We have an appointment with a specialist on Monday to check it out, but even with both things my doctor is confident that she will be born healthy.

  • We had the same thing, had a follow up ultrasound yesterday at a specialist. They said it's nothing to worry about if everything else looks normal and that it is very common with the advanced ultrasound technology they have now days. He said we don't have to do anymore rechecks for it during the rest of the pregnancy or after she is born!

We were told this today about our little boy. She said that it could be a marker for Downs but only if there are other markers for Downs (which thankfully LO does not have). So she said that almost 4% of healthy babies have this and that they outgrow it by the third tri. Glad that someone said that the MFM said the Downs info is outdated. FX for everyone. We go back in 4 weeks for another US
  • I appreciate your comments ladies. I feel reassured and I'm very thankful for that!
