Toddler beds

My almost 2 yo boys started climbing out of their cribs. Today one of them didn't nap because he could never settle down enough. They usually go down great but in the last week things don't go a smoothly. The other one finally was tried enough and stopped climbing out and fell asleep. I tried a pack n play and he climbed out of that too. So when we make the switch to twin beds I'm thinking i may need to separate them. Any experience? Just wondering how other mamas handled things. I'd like to keep them in the same room but I have a feeling they would just keep each other up longer. A friend is going through this with her kid and sometimes it takes an hour of him playing and just wandering his room before he crashes in the corner lol. But with two I can imagine them being silly together and never getting to that point or keeping the other up.

Re: Toddler beds

  • Let me know when you find out -_- I moved my singletons into their toddler beds at 17mo or so.. but my twins try to kill each other (James will put pillows on Simon's face and sit on them - WHY?!)... so they are still in their cribs at 19mo old. I don't have the room to separate them, so for now I just hope that they don't climb out and fall and injure themselves.

OMG same boat....only N has already climbed out of his crib (at 19 months wtf??) I took the bottom out of his crib so he just has a mattress on the floor w/ a crib frame around him, so between that and making sure he's wearing socks to bed so he can't get his little toes gripped I'm buying a little more time. But yeah.....I am dreading the day we have to switch. Dreading it. And we only have two bedrooms so separating them is not an option.

  • I'm so happy mine haven't tried to climb out of their cribs. They will be 2 in 3 weeks and are still content. I will keep them in as long as I can. I dread the day we have to change bc I don't think they will stay in bed and they will keep each other up. We can't separate them either bc #3 is due anytime now so he has the other room.

  • My boys decided one night- which happened to be the night that I was out at a function- to climb out of their cribs and not stay in them.  The next morning we converted to toddler beds- and had to anchor the beds to the wall since they were the Gulliver cribs from IKEA, so super light and easy to move around on the hardwood floors.  We also had to tie the mattresses to the frame since they could take them off.

The first night they were put down at the normal time, with a child safe lock on the door.  They did not go to sleep for 2 hours.  They ran around, jumped around etc.  Finally they both slept.  This went on for maybe a month- but less and less time up.  So soon they would go to bed and fall asleep in 10 minutes.  After a year we moved them to twin beds and they stayed in bed and fell asleep.

So I guess my advice is that it might be rough at first but it is a phase and will pass.

When N did his little Houdini move I was also out that night.....I had so many missed calls from DH afterwards!! :P

Thanks for sharing your story....I imagine whenever we switch it will be chaotic at first, but glad to know it will all work out eventually. :)

  • We ended up taking out the spring part and was able to drop the mattress another 2 inches so that buys us some time! I dred having to just let them have that free for all when we switch to twin beds. I am thinking of skipping the toddler beds and doing twin mattresses maybe on the floor. A month chickaboo?! Yikes. I know the excitement will eventually wear off for them after the transition but I just hope it doesn't take forever lol!
