Birth Story!
He’s here! As I already told you, I headed to L&D last Thursday for what was supposed to be an U/S that would more than likely be followed by an induction. I wanted to wait as long as possible before being induced but I was at week 41 and with GD, we were at a point where we probably shouldn’t wait any longer.
I’d had some contractions in the morning, but that was nothing new; I’d been having strong enough contractions for more than three weeks, and they never led to anything. I was still able to do my yoga and take Tumaini to the park before leaving for the hospital.
We got to the hospital, and the nurse wanted to do a vaginal exam before the U/S. She started checking me and was like: “You know your water broke, right?”. I had no clue. Turns out the contractions were actually regular too, so she transferred me to another nurse, who told me that I had a few hours to walk around the floor and really get things going on my own.
I started walking around noon, and I must have walked the entire floor a thousand times. H went to pick up Tumaini at daycare, brought her home and stayed with FIL since he was supposed to be babysitting her while MIL was at an appointment, but didn’t feel comfortable staying alone with her… I called H at 3:30 to tell him the contractions were picking up and I would want his support soon.
Around 4, I really started feeling the contractions and had to really focus to stay in control. However, with a 40 hour labor with Tumaini, I thought we still had a long time to go. I went to the toilet, and squatting to pee must have shifted baby because things started going really fast from that moment.
Before I knew it, I was screaming to the nurse that I wanted to push. I was standing by the bed and it took everything I had to go lay down. As soon as I got into the bed, I started pushing and the nurse started screaming for a doctor. It took FOUR pushes, probably less than 15 minutes, and he was there.
All in all, I was in what I considered active labor for two hours. The pain never got unbearable and I never lost control. I had no idea a birth could go so smoothly, especially considering the experience I had with Tumaini. I got the natural birth I was really hoping for, but I was so lucky to have such a short and relatively easy labor.
So he’s here, all 23 inches and seven pounds 15 ounces of him. Tumaini seems to be adaptating really well and is sweet as can be with him, always covering him in kisses. H has been amazing while I recover, and he’s also spending a lot of time with Tumaini, which is easing the transition, I’m sure.
P.S. Pregnant ladies, if your doctor approves, drink the RRL tea! I don’t know if it’s the reason this labor was so different, but I’m glad I drank it. I think the yoga and the squats might have helped too, but we’ll never know.
