Recommendations for best breast-like bottles??

Hi Ladies,

I plan on exclusively breastfeeding during my entire maternity leave (first 12 weeks), but I will need to pump thereafter so that my newborn may eat while I am at work.  I am looking for a bottle that most closely mimics the process of breastfeeding, and feels most natural and breast-like for the baby.  Do any of you have any good recommendations?  Thanks in advance!

Re: Recommendations for best breast-like bottles??

  • We tried many, many bottles. He rejected everything except the Lansinoh mOmma Natural Wave.

He went through phases of rejecting everything but the boob to being awesome at bottles. The temp had to be perfect or he got pissed!

    Good luck!

  • I agree momma. DD doesn't refuse bottles however these bottles do the best with not leaking a ton down the side of her mouth.

Tommie tippee bottles suck! The nipple doesn't stay like it should (falls in on itself) and she ends up drinking much less because of it.

  • Medela Calma is really not recommended by LCs despite Medela's claims that it mimics the breast. Our LC and the hospital recommended Playtex Natural Latch and our girls still use them, slowest flow nipple.

  • We are using platex air vente bottles with the natural latch nipple which was one of the top bottle/nipples in a few studies. My LO hasn't had a problem with them.

We first tried our Playtex drop ins from DD1 and she refused. Tried the medala bottles that came with the pump, also refused. The winner was tommee tippee, the anti colic variety which are extremely slow flow. She liked them extremely warm. Used for 9 months, no issues.

Don't get too stressed about finding a breastlike bottle. No bottle is going to exactly mimic a breast and by 12 weeks that baby will likely have no issues coming back to the breast when you're around! I do agree with the other poster, introduction of the bottle before six or eight weeks is best.

  • we also liked tommee tippee. we used the lowest flow nipple the entire time DS was taking bottles at DC.

This. We had the exact same experience.
Same here and the bottle has to be very warm almost hot or she will still reject it.
  • We tried a few different brands and had the best luck with the Tommee Tippee with the slowest flow nipples.  We introduced the bottle around 4 weeks, giving her a bottle of pumped milk about 3x a week, just to get her used to it.  It took some fussing and patience, but she got the hang of it and now drinks my milk from the bottle while I'm at work.  We have not moved up on the flow of the nipple - still a stage 1.
  • Keep in mind every baby is different so you may have to try several bottles to find one your kiddo will take!  That being said we tried Playtex, Medela, Tommee Tippee, and Avent naturals.  She would only take the Medela and Tommee Tippee and we've been using them since.

I also recommend starting to pump/feed bottles before you go back to work.  I started pumping when DD was 3 weeks, I pumped an hour after her morning feeding every single day up until around 10 months old.  That was my freezer stash on non-work days, and was her first bottle of the day on daycare days.  For our (eventual) second baby we are going to have DH start giving bottles around 3 weeks as well (probably a bedtime bottle several nights a week).  He and DD had a hard time bonding the first 4-5 months and we think more bottle feeding would have helped that a lot.

    Best of luck!
  • We ate also in the tommee tippee camp as well. I also really liked born free. I agree with giving a bottle here and there at least for a few weeks before you go back I work we gave the first bottle around 1 month because I was in a wedding shortly after and needed to know she would take the bottle she also took the medela bottles that came with the pump but I didn't like them as much and worried they made her gassy. She choked a little on the tommee tippee when she was really little but by the time I went back to work when she was 4 months she was taking them like a champ. Temperature never bothered my LO but we always used the slow flow nipples and I think that was a big part of the success.

this! Although we ran out of clean bottles the other day and had to use the tommee tippee and we had no issues. She's been back on a bottle for 9 weeks now.

  • We tried the Avent natural bottles, and the flow was way too fast, even from the slowest flow nipples. It was running down LO's chin. Then we tried Dr. Brown's, but LO was not accepting bottles, and we weren't sure if it was the nipple, or bottles in general. Then we went on to the Munchkin Latch, and after a few tries, she finally took it. Nipple collapsed at first, but I was told to release a tiny bit of air through the valve at the bottom when that happens, and it worked like a charm. I'm back at work now, a month after we started this process, and LO takes 3 bottles a day from our nanny.

Not all babies like the same bottles though, so this was just our experience. My friend's baby loved Comotomo.
