Slow weight gain and less feedings

Hi ladies,

My LO is 13 weeks old. He's always been long and skinny, but hasn't been gaining as much as his ped would like.

He's a comfort nurser and at his weight check today, the nurse asked me to space out his feedings to once every 3 hours. Currently he nurses about every 2 hours. The nurse thinks that he's not getting enough hind milk. But other than slow weight gain, he shows no signs of a foremilk/hind milk imbalance.

I like being able to comfort my LO with nursing when he needs it. But should I follow the nurse's advice and only out him on the breast every 3 hours?

Thanks for your advice!

Re: Slow weight gain and less feedings

  • Oh thank you! I walked out of there feeling so sad. And confused. I love nursing him and can't imagine denying it to him when he clearly wants it.

He was diagnosed with Silent Reflux a month ago and was put on Zantac. Since then, he has gained .5 oz per day. The nurse today said he's started dipping on the chart a little bit. But he's happy and meeting all milestones. He's also really talk. Just skinny.

I have an appointment with the doctor tomorrow morning.

Thanks again. I just knew her advice made no sense ...

  • I agree with PP.  Unless you have a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance, that advice makes no sense.
  • I agree with others. You're doing great, by the way.
My little guy has been a SLOW gainer as well. Started out at 6 lbs 12 oz, dropped to 6 lbs 3 oz. By 2 weeks old, he was up to 6 lbs 9 oz, and at a month, 7 lbs 5 oz. At 2 months 8 lbs even and at 3 months, 8 lbs 13 oz. He went from 5% all the way down to 0% for weight.

My pedi finally said that we need to either feed more bottles to see how much he's getting or supplement. I think the main issue was he wasn't getting enough hind milk. So, I nursed longer on one side before switching. And I've also started introducing a little bit of formula (2-4 oz per day total). After a week, it seems like he's over 9 lbs and finally getting out of newborn clothes.

I suggest feeding more often and making sure he stays on one side longer.

At the end of the day, all that really matters is that he's gaining. Plus, if his output is good and he's hitting other milestones don't worry.
