Reading

I know how important reading is to our little ones (I work in a school!) but does anyone feel like their kids just want to eat the books?  My guy will listen/look at the pages for about a minute before he is trying to get it in his mouth!  He especially likes the soft, crinkle-y ones!  Haha!

Re: Reading

  • DD (now 3) didn't really care about being read to until quite a bit older. Eating books was one of her favorite pastimes. I think at this point communication is the goal, not necessarily reading .. pointing to things and naming them, singing nursery rhymes, etc.

  • I should save this for FFFC, but i only have a couple books. I read to DS on the iPad. Lord, I'm a bad mom. :( this is a good reminder that I should go get some touch and feel ones now that he is old enough to like something other than the bright colors on the screen.

I'm currently reading DS fifty shades of grey, we're on book 2. There's a bad mum confession for you
    HA! That's awesome.

  • My babe gets very crabby when I try to hold him still and read to him! I like the idea of reading to him while he eats.
  • I'm a huge advocate of reading but I've fallen down on the job here. And DS has a ton of books. No excuse except i always forget. At least DC is reading to him!

  • DD will sit on my lap and go all crazy slapping the pages while I try to read. When I turn a page she tried to grab it and stick it in her mouth. And I will second/third/fourth those crinkly books. Like baby crack.

  • We read couple of books in the evening as part of her bedtime routine. For most books she will pay some attention for a minute before she wants to do something else. Her favorite is an animal peek-a-boo book with touch and feel pictures. That's the only book she pays attention to longer than the other books.

We have a lot of books, but I keep buying her more. I get bored reading the same ones over and over again. My favorite is Black Dog (forgot author name).

I usually read to her in the afternoon, when she seems interested. She loves rhymes and will look at pictures but doesn't really reach for the books. At bedtime, I read her a chapter of whatever I'm reading while she nurses. It ends up being kind of like white noise that soothes her. We're currently reading City of Bones.

  • I try to read to DD reguraly but some of those board books are terrible! I do not like "Good Night Moon " at all!

  • Love those of you who are reading your adult books to them!  I'm going to have to try that, then at least I will get a little reading in!

britab - I agree, I'm not a fan of that book.  Some of the most popular baby books are awful in my mind!!  It's also funny to read books that I remember reading as a child and loving (Pokey Little Puppy as an example) and reading it for the first time in 30 years and being like, that's the way it ends?? Haha!!

  • I've studied early literacy and at this age, chewing on books is exactly what they should be doing.

  • We read to ds every night and always switch up the book. My favourite is I love you through and through bc it mentions loving fingers, toes and I always point and wiggle them for him :) he gets pretty distracted so usually after a book or two he's done lol

  • @stina76‌ I loved The Poky Little Puppy when I was a kid! It's one of the first books I read to DS. Can't go wrong with a book that features both puppies and desserts.

  • I never had it as a kid, but I love reading The Runaway Bunny. I teared up the first time i read it to her. Also, teared up at the end of Guess How Much I Love You. "I love you to the moon -- and back."

We have this one too! We also really like Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes. We borrowed one from the library called All Of Baby Nose to Toes and that is a lot of fun too. Too stimulating for bed time, though.

  • DH used to read DD1 political speeches at bedtime. Then one night, at about 8m old , he read her a scene from Goodfellas (why???). She screamed for 2 hours after that? DD1 wasn't really interested in books until closer to 12m. Now at 22m we have to read her the same 3 books over and over, anything else she will immediately say No No No and put it back on the bookshelf, LOL! I need to start a bedtime routine with DD2 ad start reading her some books too!

  • Mine tries to do the same thing and sometimes we don't get to it sadly. But we read during the day too. The other night it was so cute. She was trying to turn the pages and started talking like she was reading the sorry!

  • Oh and we like to read the going to bed book and we sing brown bear brown bear.
