EBF and Sleep Schedule

Hi Everyone,

A couple months back my LO struggled with weight gain while I EB'ed. With many efforts and support of a new pediatrician, I was able to increase my supply and continue EB'ing. Now my LO is 5 months old and we have been struggling with his sleep schedule. During month three, he was sleeping through the night but struggling with weight gain. We were advised by a lactation consultant that he should not be sleeping through the night that early and may be contributing to his weight struggles and my low supply. I started waking up through the night to pump and he began waking up for one night feeding. As the weeks go on, he wakes up more and more frequently, now every two hours throughout the night. I know that all babies are different but I hear from so many moms that their LO's are sleeping through the night for 9-12 hours. Has any one else had this happen with their LO?

First, he fusses and I try to soothe him with a pacifier but that doesn't work (although that does work during his naps during the day). He seems to want to nurse. He will eat for nearly a full feeding meanwhile asleep this whole time. He never really "wakes up" just fusses and then cries until I nurse.

I am not sure what to do. Should I continue on this schedule until introducing solids at 6 months? Or should I work with him to get him to sleep for longer periods of time. If so, how do I do that? I know these night feedings are helping with his weight gain so I hesitate to cut them out, but at the same time I feel like I am doing something wrong when all of the other mom's with babies his age are sleeping through the night while EB'ing with no problem.

Thanks for your help!

  • I EBF my 4 1/2 month old son. He still regularly wakes up 2 times a night. I put him down about 9 to 9:30 and he wakes up around 2 and then again around 5 to 5:30. I consider him a good sleeper because he nurses for about 15 minutes and falls right back asleep. I heard that sleeping a five hour stretch is considered sleeping through the night.
  • Same. 6mo and still wakes every 2-3hrs. Hates pacis and I have to nurse her back to sleep eeeevvveeerrryyy time.
