Cloth Diapering

Where to find used cloth diapers

FTM here, due in December and trying to build my stash. I've been stalking the swap thread on this board, but other than that, I was hoping for your suggestions for the best places to buy gently used cloth, especially newborn items (prefolds, workhorses, covers). I have seen you suggest Facebook groups generally, but not specific ones. Any other places? I'd appreciate your collected wisdom ;)

Re: Where to find used cloth diapers

  • Craig's List as well.

You never know what you will find.

Also, make sure you are familiar with the products that you want to buy.  If you join a buy/sell/trade group, watch the sales for a little bit and get familiar with pricing.

  • If you are looking for prefolds and workhorses there is a GMD buy/sell/trade site that gets lots of traffic. ETA: that's a facebook site.

Do you have a local store that might sell used?
Thanks! I will look for the FB site. I do have a local store, Fluff Envy, but no used as far as I can tell.

  • The biggest FB swap group is simply called "Cloth Diaper Swap".  There's also "Cheapie Dipes B/S/T", "Fluff Addicts Cloth Diaper B/S/T", "Cloth Diaper B/S/T", "Cloth Diaper Swap II" and then tons of ones for specific brands

  • If they have a brick and mortar store, I'd call and ask. My local store doesn't put theirs on the website cuz they can't keep up with it all.
Good to know! It's a few towns away, so I haven't made my way there yet, but that does give me some hope :) I'm trying to get the basics at the best price before I'm totally in the throws of the addiction!

  • My town has a FB cloth diaper group and I've found some deals there. Maybe try typing in "your town cloth diapers" or even try "your area of the state" and "cloth diapers" on FB. I've also found the occasional deal on Craigslist.

Also if you like Green Mountain Diapers, there's a GMD buy/sell/trade group on FB. I've bought some diapers that way, too. I just send the money via paypal.

  • I've been using Hyena Cart a lot lately. Spots corner is the used section and there are always tons of newborn stuff, especially covers. I actually just bought 6 medium GMD workhorses for around 40$.

And our brick and mortar store doesn't post used dipes on their website but they always have tons in store.

  • One of the local CD stores hosts a swap once a month, but it's not widely advertised. Definitely call your local store. Also, keep an eye on consignment sales. Someone just destashed a ton of diapers at one of the big kids' consignment sales.

A word of caution: be sure to carefully check PUL and elastics in the diapers that you consider. When I was first starting my stash, a lady sold me 8 BG pockets for what I thought was a great deal. It turned out that the PUL had minute cracks all through it, and the diapers leaked like crazy.

  • To add what @unaveragejane‌ said. Do a sniff test too. I once went to pick up hemp inserts and they STUNK. I'm fine with a little stain as I can work with that. But I'm not risking stink.
  • I use ebay to buy and sell and have had good experiences.  There's always a handful of GMD stuff up, and plenty of covers.

    Also, spots corner.
  • Also check out your local mom swap group on Facebook, if your area had one. It's not just cloth diapers but people post them in mine and then you can do pick up instead of PayPal and shipping, etc. If it's a large group.

  • I've also used clothdiapertrader.com.

But mostly the facebook group, I think I'm on Cloth Diaper B/S/T.

  • Jillians drawers also has a gently used page.
  • The other good thing about going to the cd store is you can get a better grasp on what new is like and new prices so it's easier to mentally compare the used ones to the new ones in terms of value.
