I know that I'm asking this question super early but now that I'm at a midway pregnancy point I'm starting to think about the little things. What are some of the essentials you will need to pack in your hospital bag?
Couple changes of comfy pjs/lounging clothes and slippers. Light sports bra for laboring in the tub if you wish. Snacks for your partner and yourself if you're planning no meds. Camera! Glasses, if you wear them. Hospital had basic toiletries last time for me.
Bethechange you wishtoseeintheworld. ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Toothbrush, phone charger, MY OWN PILLOW. Change of clothes. Slippers.
Seriously, if I go to the hospital with just those things, I'll be good.
In addition to all of this, make sure your change of clothes includes pajamas, i hate those awful gowns. DH brought his laptop, I brought a book. Oh! A hair brush is nice too, you may sweat and toss around a lot.
Truth. I always have hair ties on my wrist so I'm good with that. And since I'm having an RCS, I won't be laboring in the hospital at all, most of my stay will be post-birth, and the hospital gowns with the boob holes were marvelous. PJ pants officially added to my pack list. lol.
I brought my sundries bag so I had my own hair and soap products. Made me feel better after showering with my own stuff.
If you are planning on BF, I would suggest nursing tanks or shirts so you're not having to mess with the hospital gown much. Along those lines I would bring nipple cream (lanolin, etc). Glasses if you wear contacts (I've had so many patients forget these), slippers or flip flops, and larger underwear.
How about things for the baby? Do I need to bring my own diapers/ wipes/ pacifiers and bottles? Anything for DH or not necessary since we live 10 min drive from the hospital?

Yes. I'll bring a blankie, a hat (they usually give a hat in the hospital), and a going home outfit. Hospitals generally provide basic onesies/gowns, receiving blankets, diapers, wipes, and some feeding-related items (mine gave me a nipple shield cuz DS was technically a preemie and wasn't quite latching at first, AND a medela manual pump). With DS, I brought a couple of our own clothes for him, but he wound up wetting through everything so he wore the hospital gowns anyway, lol.
we also live literally 5 blocks from the hospital, so if I happen to forget anything, FI can easily go back home for it.

In addition to our going home outfit, I am going to bring some onsies, a hat, socks and some of our own swaddling blankets. I am also going to bring some of those newborn "mittens." Our DS had long nails when he was born and even after filing he ended up scratching his face and my boobs. Every time we would nurse he'd reach out to kind of grab at my boobs and scratch them. It hurt worse than latch issues!
ETA: our hospital provided diapers and wipes. They had Huggies.
The hospital I'm delivering provides a list of suggestions (mine specifically mentions diapers so I guess they don't provide them). You may want to check if your hospital has a list.
Toiletries, like shampoo, conditioner. Face wash, deodorant. My own pillow. Comfy jammies that I can nurse easy in. Slippers. Chapstick! Hair ties, and a hair clip. Comfy clothes to go home in. 1 or 2 outfits for baby (because I want options for his coming home outfit. ) His blanket (that I'll sleep with weeks prior to get my smell on it.) camera Phone chargers Brush jammies for Dh Slippers for him Extra change of clothes Tooth brush and paste fit us both mouthwash.
Extras I'll pack are my makeup, curling iron. Blow dryer. (Because I might feel up to getting pretty. )
It may seem silly, but I took my blow dryer. I ended up being in the hospital for over 84 hours and after laboring and I HAD to shower and blow dry my hair.. I hate laying around with wet hair.
Most of these have been covered, but here's my list for good measure:
For me:
Comfy pj pants
Robe
Nursing tanks
Toiletries
Pillow
Nipple cream
Underwear (I'd suggest buying a boy cut/higher waist cut in the off chance you need a csection. I'd bought a pack of bikini in a larger size, but couldn't wear them because the hit right at my incision and was stuck with the mesh hospital panties)
Baby:
Wipes (our hospital has wipes but you have to wet them and I thought they were rough)
Muslin swaddle blankets
Side snap long sleeve shirts with fold over mittens (these are awesome!)

I also took my blow dryer. By day 4 drying my hair is what finally made me feel human!
Something to play movies/TV shows and respective chargers. Bring a Kindle Fire or an iPad or something, and load it up. Labor can be boring. And you do not want to be stuck where I was: 23 hours of labor, nothing on TV except an Austin Powers marathon. It did not make me horny, baby.
mm 2/17/11 * dd born 4/20/12 * bo 1/3/14 * edd 1/21/ 1/15
The hospital I'm going to actually provides two lists... one for labour and delievery and one for a larger bag if you end up needing to stay for a bit longer. Basically they suggest you bring the small bag in with you right away and either send SO home for the bigger one or keep in the car until after LO is born.
Can't really add anything to the suggestions others have made at this point aside from medication if you take any.
pads! and tucks! check with the hospital on what they provide I know my hospital does not provide anything no pads diapers wipes baby clothes nothing oh well they do provide soap that im allergic to so that's something
I packed some snacks in mine as I had to stay in for a few days and my hospital food was vile and I was starving aha so just incase you have to stay in always handy to keep some in there

Ridiculousness was on tv the entire time I was in labor lol.
Thank you for the feedback. I'm definitely an overpacker so I'll try to stick to the essentials and send DH to fetch whatever else I'll be missing from home lol
I brought way too much with DD!! This time I'll be bringing: socks, nursing tops, comfy bathrobe, going home clothes (for me and Baby Boy), toiletries (toothbrush/toothpaste, shampoo/conditioner, deodorant, brush, powder and chap stick), cell phone and charger, pillow, towel, Nook and an extra bag for everything the hospital gives me.
Something to think about...the list could get pretty long. You might want to cull to necessities so that you don't need multiple trips to grab all your stuff when you leave.
As far as those saying to bring your own pillow... I would not bring anything to the hospital that you can't wipe down or wash. I've taken care of two nurses who brought their own pillows from home and just left them here to be thrown out, saying that there was no way in hell that they wanted to bring home hospital cooties and put them in their bed. Just be aware that not everything gets wiped down and cleaned the way you would clean your house at home, and hospitals are not very sanitary, despite our best efforts.
I was happy I brought my robe and extra pairs of underwear, as I didn't want to wear mesh hospital undies and there were times that the bleeding was heavy and I needed to change underwear. Bring your own toiletries as hospital issued ones are yuck, and don't bring much for baby other than going home outfit. The hospital has everything else.
Toiletries. Change of clothes for me and DH. Camera. Phones and corresponding chargers. Make up kit. Thank you PP for reminding me about bringing own pillow and blanket. And then of course baby stuff - new born diapers, going home clothes, burp cloth, wipes, swaddling blanket, etc

You don't need to bring these things for baby. The hospital provides everything. The only thing you NEED is a going home outfit.

I brought my blow dryer and my flat iron. They have a photographer that comes around to each room and does newborn photos and me and DH were in some of the photos.
I agree on all the toiletries from home. If you were never a pad user try to find some ahead of time that are comfy for you. It may sound weird to say try on some different pads. But it took me a good 4-5 days post partum and about 3 different brands before I found one I liked. But the huge pads most hospital provide were only necessary for the first day or two.
A plethora of salty and sweet snacks. In had a bad craving for sweets at about 1 a.m. and a friend so graciously brought me a bag of almost every sweet you could find in a grocery store.
Notebook (or something to type on) to write down the birth story if you are into that kind of thing.
I brought my own towels for me and DH. Hospital towels are tiny and scratchy.
This time I'm bringing my own blankets. The hospital blankets were so thin.
We also brought a fully packed diaper bag.also brought my breast pump so the lactation nurse could help me make sure I was using it right.
Oh BABYBOOK! (Or anything else you may want foot prints in) A lot of the times they will go ahead and do the footprints in your baby book when they do it for their records.
Am I the only one who lived in the hospital gown and mesh undies the entire time? I never got dressed until it was time to go home! I guess I would feel differently if I had a lot of people visiting, but it was only my mom and siblings so I didn't bother getting dressed for them!
Don't judge my stupidity, but does the baby stay swaddled in a blanket until it's time to go home; staying naked. Or do I need clothes for him after he is born along with a going home outfit?
My hospital provided a shirt & halo swaddle for baby to use while we were there. I only got her dressed when we went home. But if you want hospital pictures, you might want to bring something cuter than the plain white shirt.
The hospital provides everything you need for baby. I just didn't like the quality of some of the stuff my hospital has (wipes we're rough and the kind you have to wet, swaddling blankets were really thick and pilled, pull over the head t shirt not my favorite for dressing a newborn) and preferred my own stuff. If you do a hospital tour, you can ask what they provide for baby.

Nope! I also lived in the ugly gown, mesh panties and slipper socks. I was not feeling so hot and putting on pants seemed like a lot of work. And I made the mistake of bringing a nursing tank from my sister without trying it on first. Tried to put it on and the damn thing was too small
This time I think they'll kick me out sooner, maybe after 24 hours? So I'm not packing too much, just comfy clothes for me & baby, toiletries, snacks, ipad. We live close to the hospital, if I forget anything I'll just send DH to get it.
I'd also add: ID, insurance card, paperwork to add baby to insurance, pediatrician info because hospital will want it if they are an affiliated practice, list of people to call (sometimes in those first few hours it is easy to miss someone you really want to hear from you personally).
Our hospital provided toiletries, snacks for me in an open kitchen, pads, tucks, ice packs, diapers, wipes, swaddles, blankets, and onesies.
We brought snacks for hubby, my pillow, a robe (best thing ever to have, IMO), nursing tanks, nipple cream, 2 sets of clothes for me, black underwear, my own pillow, shampoo/body wash, hair dryer, make-up (yes, I wanted to feel like a 'real' person by getting ready for the day), razor, take home outfit for baby, car seat, camera, computer, phone charger.
I brought way too much stuff the first time and plan on keeping it to the bare minimum this time.
