Diaper gift as decoration?

My MIL showed me this gift she made that is kind of like a diaper cake, but the disposable diapers and baby care items ( bottle with q-tips, baby wash, rash cream, etc) is in a basket and she made it look like a hot air balloon. It's really cute and I could tell she put quite some time into making it.

However, she knows we want to use cloth diapers and has already told me that I will hate it. So, I feel like giving me a gift of disposables is really weird.

Then, she tells me that it's just for decoration, not to actually use. I don't get it. So, I'm just supposed to keep this gift full of diapers and other things in the nursery that are actually useful, but not use them? Is this a thing? Don't get me wrong. I really appreciate the thought and I wouldn't mind having some disposable diapers on hand in case I need them. I'm just confused by the whole thing.

Re: Diaper gift as decoration?

  • I agree - it's a sweet gift. You will undoubtedly need disposables at some point or another - keep a few of them in your car for days when you run out of cloth diapers on the go. Otherwise, use the other items as wanted.

Gifts aren't always about being useful, especially crafty gifts. It is something she wanted to spend her time doing to make you smile - appreciate the gesture if not the disposables.

  • We had a diaper cake that was "decoration" in DDs room for a while because it was made out of size 2 diapers so it was a while until DD fit them. It was cute and I was sad to take it apart. Like pp have mentioned, you will probably get some use of the disposables if you are out and run out of cloth. What size diapers are they?
  • I think it's weird to preempt a gift by saying that you'll hate it. But I don't consider those diaper cakes decoration. Anyone I know who has gotten one has deconstructed it and used it (or not used it, whatever).

  • I was thinking of taking some pictures, maybe leaving it up for awhile and then using it. My assumption was that these types of things were meant to be taken apart and used. I just wasn't sure if I was missing something and that most people just left it as decoration. Thanks for some clarification.

  • I left mine as a decoration in her room for awhile. It was cute and I was sad to take it apart. But eventually I took everything out and used it.

  • I was very open about the fact that we planned to use cloth, too, and ended up getting a diaper cake with disposables at my shower. I smiled, said thank you, and then ended up giving the diapers away to a friend of mine.

I've never heard of a diaper cake being just for decoration. IMO You're supposed to take it apart and use the stuff.

  • We use cloth during the day and a disposable at night because they kept the boys drier and more comfortable. I agree that the cakes are meant to be used. I'd say thank you and hold on to the diapers. You never know. Maybe your baby will be like mine and soak the clothes at night and you may find disposable more convenient.

  • My cousin made us a cute diaper tricycle with a stuffed dog riding it. It had other useful things (receiving blankets, sippy cup, etc). We left it up for a while then took it apart and used it.

  • My MIL made a diaper cake for my shower. I used it as a decoration for the shower and then took it apart at home and stored it. I didn't really have a place for it in the nursery.  I would consider it primarily a shower decoration and consider any practical use you get out of it a bonus.

  • That brings back memories, my MIL KNEW I was going to use Cloth diapers, so what does she do?  She throws me a Diaper Raffle Shower, (she actually said "it's for when you fail at the cloth diaper thing")  It was an out of town shower, and by out of town I mean an 18 hour drive. The whole thing really irritated me. So the day after the shower I returned almost all of them.  She got so offended by that.  But, Hell was i really suppossed to load my car down with a gazillion boxes of  diapers for an 18 hour road trip.  My poor dog wouldv'e had to ride in the back window because we had no room.  Beside all that I made it perfectly clear that i wanted to cloth diaper.  Plus, the whole thing caused a huge fight  between me and DH, he thought I was being a complete bitch.  I didn't speak to him for the first 9 hours of our trip home.

  • Maybe she meant it's a decoration for the baby shower? I would keep it in the baby's room for now as decoration and then when you need the stuff start deconstructing it. I'm sure she expects you to use it and not stare at it lol. I don't know much about cloth diapering, but I'm sure it's always good to have a few disposable diapers around.
