Postpartum Hives?

Wondering else if anyone is experiencing this very unexpected phenomenon? Started getting a rash on my torso a little over a week ago and thought it was just irritation from my sports bra. It went away, but has kept coming back, progressively worse each time. Now it's a huge patch of splotchy red from under my breasts almost to my navel (meeting up with those lovely stretch marks I got from pregnancy) across my whole front. I've gone to both urgent care and my midwife (when it was still a little more mild), and neither had much of an answer for me, beyond it being a rash that should go away. After consulting Dr. Google, I'm pretty sure it's hives, and apparently getting them after pregnancy is a thing, because of hormone shifts.

So, anyone else red and itchy (or experienced hives before)? Anyone know what to do about hives? Should I go see another doctor? Home remedies?

Adding this to the list of the many things people don't warn you about postpartum...

Re: Postpartum Hives?

  • Wow - I have no advice but could have written this myself! I have sensitive skin to begin with and just recently the past few weeks have noticed the same thing rash on my torso worse along where my bra touches but also red splotchy and itchy along the back of my lower neck to just below my bra and all over my stomach. It is so weird and I don't no what to do to help it.

  • @LolaX2 - sorry you're dealing with this too, but I have to say it makes me feel a little less crazy knowing it's happening to someone else. Hope we both can find something to help!

  • I suddenly became allergic to buckwheat s/p DD1 and had an anaphylactic reaction. I still get "phantom" hives on my hands and feet, especially at the knuckle joints, but we've yet to discover the cause. There isn't much you can do, they are very annoying. You can keep a journal to look for patterns but so far it's been 2 years and we've yet to find one.
  • I got them when DS was around 2 months.  They lasted almost 3 weeks :( The only thing that helped me was taking lukewarm to cool oatmeal baths twice a day. I was taking hot baths thinking that would help with the itching, but it actually makes it worse. Also comfortable loose clothing. I did't take an antihistamine because I was breastfeeding and I have heard your supply can be negatively effected. I also found that with hives they just have to run their course. I was clueless and miserable so I hope this helps you!
  • @angel4cind and @reddawnsrevenge thanks for your input! Sorry you both had to deal with hives at some point, too. Hopefully they'll be on their way out sooner rather than later!

  • I had PUPPS right after giving birth which started anywhere i had stretch marks and slowly spread throughout my body. It was so itchy i wanted to scratch my skin off. Don't know if it's the same thing you have but mine cleared up after i started taking dandilion root. I drank the tea and also the tincture. I also doused myself in hydrocortisone cream but that did little to help. The dandilion root is worth a try if nothing else works!

  • I got PUPPS at 4wk pp. That is a rash I don't wish on anyone. I wanted to scratch my skin off. I called my OB and got a steroid cream and took clairitin.
  • I had these off and on for months! My doc acted like it was unusual but now I feel like lots of people get them! They just went away eventually.
  • CalinAZ - sorry I haven't been on a a few days. My 2.5 Year DS has been sick and trying to keep him from getting baby sick is so fun! anyway I haven't gone to the doctor as its just too hard and busy with being back at work and trying get everything done with our 2 LO's and DS being sick. I so wish it would go away though. It is driving me nuts because it itches too! Hope we both get relief soon!
